Change. It's that one word that can induce anxiety in even the bravest among us. Whether it's adding a twist to a favorite tea (like I did today) or updating our church's century-old traditions, change is HARD! We've been doing things "the way we've always done them" - that old hymn, those wooden pews, even the coffee in the fellowship hall—why change a good thing? But sometimes, the only way to grow is to embrace the uncertain. I stopped at a new coffee shop near my house to grab my summer go-to: an iced chai latte. The young woman waiting on me asked if I wanted a shot of flavor with it. Wait, what? Aren't the spices in the chai the flavor? She said some people like to have a shot of fruit flavor, like peach, added. She mentioned that she also had blueberry and blackberry...hold the phone! Let's try blackberry. Y'all, it was like a piece of cool cobbler in a cup! Where has this been all my chai tea-drinking life? I guess I was so comfortable with my go-to that I hadn't noticed something new that was fantastic. And aren't we like that when it comes to our church safety protocols? We've done it this way forever, and it's been good enough.
