How Carolina Herrera Got Succession Right Carolina Herrera is one of the hottest fashion brands in New York today, and the decision to pass control from the 79 year old woman founder and leader to a 31 year old man turned out very well: the company which owns brands including Jean Paul Gaultier and Dries Van Noten has seen sales rise by 40% to more than $3.6 Billion in 2022 and double digit growth forecast for 2023. Given that age is such a prominent discussion in the media today, and that in the fashion industry there are several succession plans to consider shortly (Giorgio Armani is 89, Miuiccia Prada 74, and Ralph Lauren 84 for example,) it is vital to understand what makes succession work. Incoming CEO Wes Gordon noted that in his initial meeting with Herrera "I can’t emphasise enough the importance of establishing that trust. We were very different, but also, in many ways, were able to find beautiful bonds.” The transition has proven to be very successful, and for example the brand's number of domestic wholesale "doors" has more than doubled. Importantly, Gordon has respected the DNA and spirit of the brand and a passion for what fashion represents: "What drives me is a total awareness of the vast amount of beautiful clothes that exist in the world, the options that are available to women today. I want to make sure that if she chooses something from Herrera, it is perfect.” Gordon notes that "customers have been some of my greatest teachers." Importantly, Carolina Herrera has confirmed their positioning with a solid #strategy and brand approach: “Regardless of if you’re selling a lipstick or a dress, at the end of the day, you need to send a unified message that you’re a unique brand talking to the consumer,” said Ana Trias Arraut, Carolina Herrera’s chief brand officer in an interview with Business of Fashion. And as with every great brand, the people know what their superpower is and embrace this: "There will always be a client who wants beautiful, feminine, elegant clothes, whether it’s for day or night,” explains President Emilie Rubinfeld. “That’s our superpower.” Herrera has dressed some of the most famous women in the world, including Jacqueline Onassis, Renee Zellweger, and Michelle Obama. BERNARD ARNAULT PLANS TO APPOINT TWO MORE OF HIS SONS TO THE LVMH BOARD It's perhaps the latest step in the billionaire's succession plan. Story by: Tori Latham Photography: David M. Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images for Tiffany & Co. Bernard Arnault’s succession plan may not be any clearer, but the billionaire CEO of LVMH is making some familial moves at his company. Arnault is set to put two more of his sons on the board of his French conglomerate, Bloomberg reported on Monday. Alexandre, 31, and Frédéric, 29, could be nominated as early as this week, an anonymous source familiar with the matter told the outlet. A vote would then occur at LVMH’s annual general meeting in April. (A spokesperson for the company declined to comment to Bloomberg.) Already, two of Arnault’s other children sit on the board: Both Delphine and Antoine, the two oldest kids, became board members before they turned 30. Delphine, 48, is now the CEO of Dior, the second-largest fashion label in the LVMH family. Antoine, 46, is in charge of the entire conglomerate’s image and communications arm. The rest of Arnault’s five children also hold roles within LVMH: Alexandre is currently the head of product and communications at Tiffany & Co.; Frédéric runs the watch unit, including Hublot, Zenith, and TAG Heuer; and Jean, 25, is leading efforts to expand Louis Vuitton’s watch offerings. In all, the family holds about 48 percent of LVMH shares and almost 64 percent of voting rights. Over the years, Arnault has been expanding his family’s hold on LVMH, involving his children in various aspects of the company so that one day they can take over. Back in 2022, Arnault lifted the age limit for the CEO of LVMH to 80, and given that he’s just 74, any succession plans may take years to bear out. But he’s made it clear that he wants his kids to one day run the massive empire he’s created. So far, though, that hasn’t led to any Succession-style antics, with the Arnault children saying that they get along extremely well. Whoever does end up taking Arnault’s place will have big shoes to fill. The Frenchman is currently the third-wealthiest person in the world, with a net worth of $161 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. And LVMH last year became the first-ever $500 billion company in Europe. That sort of status and responsibility may scare off some people. But the Arnaults have demonstrated that they’re much more than just “some people.”

In a celebration British Menswear the June season marked a pivot towards an immersive and inclusive format which involved traditional runway shows, designer showrooms, a series of talks that actively encouraged participation from the public, and an exhibition curated by some of the UK’s leading creatives that amplified their fellow creatives from a range of diverse backgrounds representing their heritage, culture, and sub-cultures and highlighting London as a springboard for directional talent that is sought-after by the world’s leading luxury brands. In my interactions with family businesses, I have always been inspired by how their companies are able to preserve their values and legacy through many generations.         The story of the world-renowned brand Hermès is a remarkable case study of a family business that avoided the usually detrimental pitfalls of business succession by coming together as a family.       In October 2010, Bernard Arnault, the founder of luxury giant LVMH, informed Bertrand Puech, the family patriarch of Hermès, through an expected call, that LVMH had acquired shares in Hermès.        Within weeks of that phone call, 50 Hermès descendants came together and unanimously agreed to introduce a holding structure that safeguarded the company from heirs who were tempted to sell shares to competitors.       Against all odds, the Hermès family had successfully defended against Arnault's acquisition attempt by standing united.       On top of that, their commitment to creating high-quality, subtly branded products has driven them towards success. The company witnessed a revenue increase by double digits even as the post-pandemic boom faded.       The story of Hermès is not just inspiring but also serves as a model for other family businesses.
