I LOVED A GIRL BUT MY FRIEND ASKED ME A QUESTION I was in a relationship some years back, and there's this profound question my friend, Israel Emmanuel, posed to me at Chicken Republic. He asked, "Josh, have you asked this girl the HARD QUESTIONS?" Curious, I inquired about the nature of these questions, and he mentioned one that caught me off guard: "CAN YOU DEFEND ME?" At first, I was taken aback, thinking, isn't it typically the guys who do all the defending and protecting? Why would I need to ask a lady that question? However, after coming across the song "Locked Away" by R.City, the lyrics resonated with me, and I couldn't help but acknowledge that indeed, my friend is a SAGE. I am someone deeply invested in the concepts of Marriage, Family, and Love. I have a vision for the kind of ecosystem I aim to build within my family, and I'm also passionate about branding. I've come to realize that Family is a brand that requires careful building, and these questions serve as BRAND CLARITY QUESTIONS. They probe into Values, Loyalty, Risk Management, and more. These inquiries are crucial not just for families, but for oneself, one's business, and even society at large. These questions aim to help build and emphasize an EXPERIENCE, and that experience casts the spell that achieves everything you could need. What is personal brand, when you really, really think about it? is it about constantly posting pictures of yourself because you've heard on the grapevine that LinkedIn likes that now? Or videos of yourself crying/laughing/winning/loosing because that's what you think you need to do to get the likes? Or do you have to post pictures of your kids, or you posing on your exotic holidays to look inspirational? Perhaps it's trying to be "controversial" or posting an "unpopular opinion" to try and stand out? Maybe, maybe not. For me, definitely not. But that's the thing. "for me" Or more to the point, "you" It's your personal brand. it's the part of yourself that you want to share, to the level you want to share it, about the thing's that matter to you. And it works. Really really well. Take this picture on my mug for example of me and The Current Mrs Rudolph. If our marriage/relationship was a brand this would sum it up perfectly. Her exasperated and ready to scream, me knowing instinctively that I'm in trouble again even if I don't know why as usual. Will that win me new business today? Probably not. Is it authentic and part of the personal brand I've built up over time that does win new business? Absolutely. The way my less than 2-year old boy responds to the words 'Good boy' is surprising. I do not know what he understands by that, but anytime he does something and we say it to him, there's a way he smiles, beats his stomach and dangles his legs with pride, that he has done something good. The fact is that everyone behaves this same way. Every man or woman wants to feel appreciated. Every wife wants to feel appreciated by her husband. Every father wants to feel appreciated by his children. Every student wants to feel appreciated by their teachers. Every employee wants to feel appreciated by their employer. There are categories where it's nearly impossible to reach the brains of people until they think of buying. In those cases, "brand awareness" marketing is essentially useless. Without an immediate need, the ability to grab attention and store long-term memory traces is virtually ZERO. In such cases, marketing should be 100% about catching people as they come in-market. Divorce attorneys are one such example. However, in the closely adjacent category of DWI attorneys, "brand awareness" advertising can be incredibly effective. The KEY is understanding the mindset of future buyers and how they perceive "future risk value." Both a divorce and a DWI are high-cost problems, but most people getting married are seldom anticipating getting divorced. But those who go out drinking always have, in the back of their minds, a concern about possibly getting stopped after drinking too much. "Future Risk Value" = Cost of the Future Problem × Probability of the Problem occurring (discounted for time) Near-term problems are more valuable to solve than future problems. Low-probability problems are worth less than high-probability problems. If the "Future Risk Value" of the problem is below some threshold, it will be impossible to hold attention long enough to establish long-term memory traces about your product or solution in the mind of your future buyer, making "brand awareness" a near impossibility. How we do marketing has to be closely tailored to understanding how brains work!
