Over the past year, I have been studying and observing various models for helping school-age newcomers, also known as English Language Learners(ELLs), to learn English and settle successfully in their new homes. ❗❗❗ "Parents of English learners are often unaware of their children’s progress learning the language...Even when parents do receive the scores, they do not always understand what they mean or what their children need to do in order to be reclassified." This gap in understanding can be detrimental for students and their families. At the 2022 NYS TESOL Conference, South Country School District MLL teachers presented on how they use digital portfolios to help bridge this gap in communication and understanding of student progress in English proficiency. Progress reports can be abstract and lack clarity, while digital portfolios offer a window into their students' work against clear targets of measurement by grade level. Neither is it to say that there are multiple studies and research that have proven that a multilingual approach in education is better. While I was working as a teacher in various CBSE schools, I witnessed this madness over English speaking. It is scary, especially for the children. I myself did my schooling in a government-private aided school and did not know how to speak in English. I learned it in my 20s when I started working.
