Pick a winner. From May through mid-September, my family would congregate on either Friday or Saturday night at The Hazel Park Raceway in Detroit, Michigan to watch the thoroughbred races. They made small bets but dreamed of a big payout. It was fun. My dad would say, ”Pick a winner, Gwenne.” I knew nothing about statistics, so I made ‘gut’ picks. Either by number or name. If the horse won, I’d get $1. The one time dad bet the TRIFECTA (top three horses in order) my picks’ odds were 4 to 1. It was a winning pick. With a big payout. After that, winning was the expectation. Fun was no longer a factor. ”Pick a winner.” ”Pick a winner.” ”Pick a winner.” And the magic was gone. It’s taken a lifetime to find my internal compass, my knowingness, my joy. I’ve learned never to pit myself against myself. By setting my own pace. By focusing on the one thing. By not caring about competition. By not worrying about winning but besting myself. I do what the horse trainers do. Put the blinders on: 1. To stay focused. 2. To prevent being distracted. 3. To keep sight of the “vision”. 4. To run for the love of the race. You’re betting on you. Your own high-stakes race. Whether you win, place or show. 🏇 Btw, today is the Kentucky Derby The horses are scheduled to leave the starting gate at 7:03 p.m. ET.
