It was great to join KPFA radio today to discuss the Biden Administration's approach to drug policy, particularly fentanyl. Unfortunately, we are seeing a renewed war on drugs at the federal level that's only being complicated by synthetic drugs. You can listen to the interview starting at around 33 minutes and ending at around the 45-minute mark. #NoMoreDrugWar

Research Associate at The Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR), University of Victoria | MSc in Biomedical Sciences
Had an excellent time presenting at the 17th annual conference for the International Society for the Study of Drug Policy (ISSDP) at the Université de Montréal. Our research project titled Evaluation of Decriminalizing Small Amounts of Illicit Drugs in Victoria, BC: A Seasonally Adjusted Interrupted Time-series Analysis of Police Data, investigated the impacts of decriminalization on population-level changes in police data. Criminalizing substance has been show to cause harms for people who use drugs, making research evaluating the socio-legal impacts of decriminalization important for health-systems decision making and addressing the toxic illicit drug crisis in BC.

Attorney representing Cannabis Businesses and Affordable Housing Developers. I help people help people.
The hearing just recessed for a quick moment so congress members could go vote and will be back shortly. From what I've been hearing so far, every single testimonial is asking for reasonable regulations for #hemp-derived #cannabinoid products, NOT re-criminalization or prohibition, but instead seeking practical #solutions that allow the market to flourish while protecting consumers through truth in labeling, standardized testing, packaging and warning requirements, age gates where appropriate, child-resistant packaging, etc. We are in the midst of an enormous moment in #cannabis history where Congress is taking into consideration the public risks of unregulated hemp-derived products and looking for ways to solve for these concerns. The proliferation of #delta8 and other hemp-derived cannabinoids is forcing the hand of the federal government in a manner that was unanticipated five years ago when the #2018FarmBill passed. Now is the time to mobilize #cannabistogether so the medical/adult use markets can begin to operate within a framework that is functional and sensible, that protects consumers WITHOUT being #overregulated and #overtaxed, and the hemp market can become #reasonablyregulated so bad actors can be forced out and the industry can thrive as a normal, stable market. The #waronhemp is overshadowing the best opportunity #marijuana has had to create an equitable market that allows for small businesses to be successful, provide an real opportunity for generational wealth building. While #Congress may not have intended for the creation of a supply of #consumable hemp that may have the ability to cause user impairment, the changes to the definition of hemp in the 2018 Farm Bill very clearly show that Congress DID intend to allow a new consumable market to be explored. The market is loud and clear - they want access to these products! #cannabistogether

Data scientist+researcher+statistician+consultant with experience across U.S. & E.U. Basically, I nerd out about data and healthcare. Let's chat!
Excellent and well-supported view on decriminalization. And I have to add the "nerd note" - the nuances of evaluation and research, the exploration into how and why things happen, rarely are communicated well (or at all) in social media posts or short media blurbs or fiery political speeches. This article helps highlight an important truth beyond the specific policy issue at hand - our collective data literacy as a society is lacking, and changes in public policy and shifts out in the "real world" don't happen in a vacuum. There are many interactive and "behind the scenes" variables to consider and ways we can measure the actual impact of what's happening rather than follow a kneejerk reaction. We need to do better at communicating and understanding these nuances. (Also, shoutout to all my former Comagine Health colleagues and all their excellent work featured at the mentioned symposium!) #dataliteracy #research #measure110 #decriminalization
