So much happens at once at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity that it’s impossible to see it all, hear it all and summarize it all — so the takeaways have to be personal. Here are a few of mine from an exhilarating week (with no complaints about being tired! - going to Cannes is such a privilege and for me always a thrill): -> During a great panel at The Female Quotient (my last of the week; first picture here) I shared my belief that expertise used to be vertical (the more senior you got, clearly the more you knew) but today it is necessarily circular. I love to learn, and teach, and learn… and that continuous cycle is reflected in all of these photos, and an essential of modern leadership. - > Are there any other (set of) industries that embody THIS much dynamism, community and heart? I doubt it. Work is fundamentally about the people with whom you get to do the work (and learn from, see point above). To be in a place where that happens in under a week with people like Scott Galloway Kara Swisher Jay Shetty Gary Vaynerchuk Seth Matlins Jenny Rooney and so many more incredibly sharp colleagues is such a gift. - > There was meaningful discussion among my #CMO peer group, especially at ADWEEK about fear, vulnerability, taking our armour off / the importance for CEOs to lead by sharing their feelings vs. seeming to be impervious to them. -> #AI was of course a pressing topic throughout the week; two highlights for me were 1) a meeting of the founders and advisors of AI Trailblazers (Greg Kahn Shiv Singh Amit Shah Wenda Harris Millard Jon Suarez-Davis (jsd) Steven Wolfe Pereira ⚡️ which I believe is leading the way in bringing cross-functional perspectives together for responsible applications of AI for growth and 2) being a part of a panel with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on customer experience, where we shared future predictions (will AI soon by our omnipresent personal assistants?) and reminded that we need to stay focused on the “why” not just the “what.” -> At a time of so much disruption across the agency, media and client ecosystems, I was glad to partner with Jason Sperling in speaking to 4A's head Marla Kaplowitz on managing these relationships as real and candid partnerships, not “vendors” - > Being together with my partner in podcasting Steven Wolfe Pereira ⚡️ was of course a treat, and reinforced why we care so much about talking openly about all of this (again: teaching <-> learning!). In that spirit, will be discussing much more on new episodes of Brand New ! -> For the first time in going to Cannes my family came out at the end to meet me. As I always espoused during my years of actively running #ExecutiveMoms: our work often insinuates itself into our family time, but when we can flip that and allow our family to experience peak moments from the best of your work, it feels uniquely gratifying. With the headline last week that #Meta formed their first #AI Council - entirely comprised of white men - I’m glad to share that I am the first woman (but not the last!) to be enlisted by AI Trailblazers for THEIR inaugural advisory board, and I’m looking forward to being a part of their Summit in NYC later this week, during #TechWeek To be a great leader you have to keep being a learner!
