Women should have the space to be celebrated for their strengths, complexity, vulnerabilities, successes, and failures alike.
Last week, I had the privilege of participating in an event hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security . Alongside Ambassador Verveer, NYT opinion journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro, Penguin Random House Editor Madhulika Sikka, and other distinguished guests, we discussed how to diversify women's voices in the news cycle.
The event underscored a collective commitment to challenging stereotypes and telling stories that showcase the full spectrum of women's lives—not just stories of resilience but narratives that allow women to be seen as multidimensional individuals.
Drawing on her experience as Former United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues, Ambassador Verveer underscored the power and responsibility of journalists in shaping public perceptions and documenting the role of women in war, political movements, and social uprisings.
The participants hailed from every medium and proposed strategies for elevating women's voices in their coverage. These ranged from tapping into the anger of female audiences to seeking female perspectives and, of course, hiring female reporters!
