Looking at how much people dont want to work in the hospitality industry which use to be a pssionate job for alot of us in the past , especially when u love connecting with people is sad . At its heart, the hotel manager role is all about your skill in leading a team of other human beings and getting them to do their best work in a favourable environment. Effective leadership in hotels requires emotional intelligence and empathy, highly developed organisational and communication skills, self-awareness and the ability to delegate tasks and manage your tasks reliably and responsibly. In hotels, you are a leader by example, as well as by training and qualification. Leadership therefore, is something that is both studied, in terms of looking at leadership styles and approaches, and also practised as a set of interrelated soft skills. I am equal to the task.

Throughout my professional career I have possessed this mindset. What kind of leader are you? Are people following you? Team members willing to do whatever you ask, within reason of course? How you treat people is the #1 reason employees are leaving their positions! Yes, of course money makes a difference but only for a short time, it's not going to contribute towards retention. So as we continue in our industry, leaders need to become more emotionally intelligent. Understand their entire workforce isn't driven by one individual goal but hundreds of personal goals. When department heads are constantly vying for the attention and approval of their general managers, it can create a competitive and cutthroat atmosphere within the hotel and jealousy among the management team. This can lead to a lack of cooperation and teamwork among team members, as everyone is focused on advancing their own interests rather than working together towards the success of the hotel as a whole. Overall, jealousy among heads of departments and efforts to come closer to top management can have detrimental effects on teams in hotels. It is important for leaders to prioritize collaboration, communication, and support for their team members in order to foster a positive and productive work environment. By focusing on building strong relationships and working together towards common goals, teams can overcome the negative impacts of jealousy and competition to achieve success. General managers should establish clear boundaries with their head of departments to maintain a professional relationship. It is important for both parties to understand and respect these boundaries to avoid any conflicts of interest or favoritism. I welcome your thoughts and experiences in this matter.

We usually onboard one hotel over the course of 3-4 days. This week I’ve been onboarding 2 different hotels, in 2 1/2 days. Worked with leadership, worked with every shift at the desk on our systems and training (including night audit). Comp shops, locked in some healthy contracts, and got the ball rolling. But this is the payoff for me. We get to help people. We get to be a part of growth. We get to witness development. People never call us when they are “blowing it out of the water”. Oftentimes there are so many more challenges than just the sales piece. It’s the messages like this that make it all make sense for me (personally).

Remember, while fulfilling responsibilities and maintaining accountability is essential, it's also critical to acknowledge the human aspect of your team. To retain your staff, you must care for them. They spend a significant portion of their week under your guidance, so it's your responsibility to create an environment where they can thrive and feel valued. It's easy to push people down, but true strength lies in lifting them up. As a Stewarding Manager, strive to be an inspiration and a beacon of hope. Don't let ego drive away your team or lead to its downfall. Reflect on what you, as a leader, can do better. Be the change and the support your team needs. Keep Living

In hotel leadership, the little things make a huge difference, and the hospitality leaders who understand this are the ones who ultimately lead great luxury hotel companies. Some people take these things for granted, but believe me when leaders show the simplest of gratitude to their team, it inspires everyone to give their best.   It could be something as simple as saying hello at breakfast, writing a handwritten note stating you did an excellent job today in service or remembering your casual employees' names when greeting them. Leadership is all about people; it's about inspiring people to believe that the impossible is possible. It's about developing and building people to perform at heights they never imagined in hospitality.
