The Emerging Paradigm In the belly of a pandemic, a world was unmasked, Covid's shadow looms, a paradigm shifted and tasked. "Why #ShiftThePower?" echoes in the air, A poetic journey through the impact we bear. Systemic disparities, entrenched in aid's embrace, Aid ecosystems marred, a challenging race. Emerging paradigms leaving a mark like a sting, Community philanthropy, decolonisation, new voices sing. BLM rises, RINGO echoes, Africans Rising strong, #ShiftThePower, a chorus, breaking the wrong. ODA dwindles, global giving shrinks, Yet, new prospects rise, local resourcing winks. Local ownership, a development reprise, Restoring the balance, power's sweet demise. Renewed commitment to values profound, Equity, justice, development unbound. Aid's effectiveness, grassroots it seeks, Different outcomes, as the system peaks. Community knowledge, assets, networks in light, Valued, recognised, in the power's twilight. Innovation whispers, disruption calls, Solidarity and collaboration, like waterfalls. Engage in equality, mindful and aware, Power imbalances shed, as partnerships declare. Joint decisions, mutual accountability, Transparency blooms in newfound ability. Partnerships initiated, led by the underheard, Underserved communities, their voices stirred. Marketplaces bloom, match-making the way, Civil society showcased, in the light of day. Relationships first, before programmes unfold, #ShiftThePower, a tale of stories untold. So let the power shift, a dance in rhyme, Covid's impact, a shift in paradigm. "Culture does not make people. People make culture." - Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie 🚀 Cohort 3 of the Shifting Power Accelerator has launched!! We face many challenges in changing the culture and practice of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, but the passion and ambition of this cohort give me great hope! On Day 1, we reflected on what liberatory futures could look like, the assumptions we must question, and how we must move to the side to support the communities we intend to serve. Among several course frameworks and through quiet reflection, paired and group discussions, we reflected on everything from the Grand Bargain to Black Lives Matter to today: 📚 Degan Ali and Marie-Rose Romain Murphy, MS, MBA's Black Lives Matter is also a reckoning for foreign aid and international NGOs 📚 Themrise Khan's Envisioning an Alternative Ecosystem for Global Development and Humanitarianism, and 📚 Peace Direct's Nine Roles that Intermediaries Can Play in International Cooperation. If the insights shared on this first day are any indication, I know we are up for an illuminating course experience as we work to change the culture of our industry for the better - one community partnership at a time (stay tuned!). Beyond the Myth of Independence 🌈 🌻 🌎 The deeply engrained myth of independence in American culture obscures a fundamental truth: we are inherently interdependent. From the Declaration of Independence drawing inspiration from Indigenous wisdom to our modern-day reliance on community support during crises like the pandemic, our history and present reality demonstrate the power of our interconnectedness. Rather than striving for an ideal of self-sufficiency, we should embrace our interdependence. This is especially crucial for nonprofits, which can achieve far greater impact by fostering symbiotic relationships within their communities. By recognizing and leveraging our mutual dependence, we can build stronger, more resilient societies that are better equipped to address systemic challenges and create positive change. What is the Vision, Mission and Aims of theGKexperience? Vision We are founded on the belief that all young people are brilliant, and that they all deserve the same opportunities to succeed in order to make their aspirations a reality. Mission Statement We will journey alongside and offer support to young people who face long-term challenges due to poverty, disadvantage, and inequality in Glasgow and the wider area. We will build long-term trusting and respectful relationships with young people and their families over years, listening to their voices and being welcomed by them to offer support. We will be persistent in our engagement, love, and support, even and especially if it becomes difficult due the barriers they face. We will work alongside young people in their local settings and allow outdoor residential and wilderness experiences to help them soar.    What are the aims?   We will provide an integrated model of support across 4 areas: Residential experiences, local community work, a young leaders programme and tailored individual support. Through these areas, young people overcome barriers by:   -       Increasing their confidence and skills to take new steps and make positive decisions -       Creating a strong voice towards decisions that impact them -       Building resilience against adverse childhood experiences -       Gaining leadership skills and increasing prospects -       Improving physical and mental health
