Have been quiet here for a while yet the past week has been immense. Doing a 24-hours silent retreat no-phone on the water, recharging to set the mind free to crystalize so many new ideas and forms of collaboration to safeguard Nordic democracy. Try it. Getting time to write (as the journalist I once thought I should have been) to finalize our report with Gjensidigestiftelsen assembling results from 12 cities and 15 democracy concepts across Norway over three years with Emil Mønster, Ingrid Tollånes and Kine Aure Nilsen. No time for UNGA this year – but taking part in the high level vision conference by The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council on the future of Nordic collaboration – climate change, safeguarding democracy and enabling social sustainability are key priorities. Teaming up on teams with smart people to take steps on demtech innovation in Helsinki, diversity in Reykjavik, digital prevention in Copenhagen. Defining and winning moment of the week: Being in the room with the Nordic Pioneer Prize winners this year, listening and talking to them and other young leaders in our Pioneer community. Incredibly energizing. Throw these young people a problem, a thought, step away and they will identify a proper transformative solution, beyond my imagination. What a force of change. Leave the keys for the next generation now, please. Spending time with fellow ‘oldies’ aka the Nordic ambassadors to Denmark and Finnish Minister of Education to explore how we make a new push to instill democratic culture and values in youth. What government can do to work with young people, to unleash their passion to take part in society, to make a positive change, whether in politics, associations, arts or sports. I hope we can bring the Nordic Pioneer DNA and concept out to all our member cities and work together and along side young people even more to shape the future of our democracy. Peace out. Summits in general are spaces for meeting people concerned with themes that make them think, live and work for. It’s the place for sharing learned experiences, intellectual wisdom, and finally be inspired to do more, perhaps differently, and certainly to carry on with our labor in more informed ways. It is about encountering the other, listening to their unique and different preoccupations and views. It’s an opportunity to grow intellectually, spiritually and socially. When in this processes we also find the love, friendship, comradeship and joy then one leaves that space with a renewed interest in doing more and more, tirelessly, to co-create a better world. The Humanity Summit was that place for me and I’m very honoured and grateful to have been able to participate as the #AdvisoryBoardMember and to have been part of a collective commitment to signing the Humanity Pact for the fast track to bringing justice, equality, freedom, lack of poverty, access to health and education, non-discrimination, human development and ultimately in building a world where happiness, prosperity, joy and love are enjoyed by all, regardless of their genders, colour, age, creeds, bodies and thoughts. I personally left the humanity summit determined to working in the area of Healing the Traumatised by racism and discrimination and in engaging with Portuguese politicians and policymakers to work with me. A truly integrated and integrative social and political model is that which has been helping its citizens to heal from its history and past. That work done, I’m convinced that we can start a model of society where everyone is comfortable to construct in unity and love. It is critical that we acknowledge that racism exists, and that it’s been harmful and painful both for those who were the victims and also to those who feel the guilt of being the descendants of the wrongdoers. It’s going to be painful. For both parties. Like any healing process. We all go through that process in different instances in our lives, but after this, I’m convinced, we will emerge much stronger and more capable of being and doing good, better, lovingly.

Held at the European Economic and Social Committee, the seminar focused on "𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥, 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧, 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞." EVBB, committed to fostering sustainable development through dialogue, was honored to be part of this pivotal event. The joint seminar was divided into three sessions, delving into crucial topics through engaging round tables. After the welcome remarks from Oliver Röpke, Pierre-Yves Dermagne, Benoit Bayenet, and Rudi Delarue, the seminar started with the first session. 🌟 The first session addressed 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐞𝐦��𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. Esteemed speakers included Colin Scicluna from the European Commission; Ricardo Rodríguez Contreras from Eurofound, and Mikkel Barslund from the Lamarta Project, who spoke on employment policies for a low-carbon transition. 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫é 𝐒𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐫, Professor at ULB, provided insights on potential economic growth, while Konstantinos Diamantouros from SEV discussed boosting EU competitiveness. 𝐙𝐨𝐞 𝐓𝐳𝐨𝐭𝐳𝐞-𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐚 from GSEE talked about the European care strategy, and Katrīna Leitāne, EESC Youth Group President, shared the youth perspective. 🌱 The second session focused on 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬. Speakers included Joerg Tagger from DG Employment, who elaborated on the EU Commission’s role in social dialogue; 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐫 from CCE and Miranda Ulens from CNT. Maria Mateeva-Kazakova, PhD shared conclusions from the Study on NESCs. 🤝🌐 The third session explored the 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞. 𝐓𝐡é𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐤𝐞 from Business Europe, 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐞𝐬-𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐡𝐥 from ETUC, Valeria Ronzitti, Secretary-General of SGI Europe, and Veronique Willems, Secretary-General of SME United, discussed various challenges. Brikena Xhomaqi, EESC Liaison Group co-chair, elaborated on civil dialogue ambitions, highlighting the importance of inclusive engagement. 📈🔍 A standout quote from Oliver Röpke, President of the EESC, resonated deeply with all attendees: "No green deal without a social deal." 🌱🤝 EVBB remains committed to fostering dialogue and collaboration for a sustainable and inclusive future. Celebrating Five Years of Impact 🎉 On Wednesday, at the House of Lords, the UK Research and Innovation Healthy Ageing Challenge successes were celebrated following the conclusion of the Challenge. George MacGinnis, UKRI Healthy Ageing Challenge Director at Innovate UK, Stian Westlake, Executive Chair at ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, The Rt Hon. the Lord Willetts and Helena Herklots, Chair of the Healthy Ageing Challenge Advisory Group joined over 100 pioneering innovators, industry leaders, researchers, and investors to reflect on the programme and its impact. The achievements of the Challenge, a collaborative initiative delivered by Innovate UK and the ESRC, have been instrumental in addressing the challenges of healthy ageing across the UK. Successes include: 🌟242 projects funded in total, with support provided to 126 SMEs and 43 social ventures  🌟 Research and learnings shared for the good of all, with 133 publications generated from research projects  🌟High engagement with industry, with 10 successful projects led by major corporations  🌟Over 52 innovative solutions from research institutions  🌟80% of projects focused on workforce development of skills and talent  🌟 Engagement with all corners of society, with 80% of projects originating in lower-income groups We’re happy to launch our ‘Adding Life to Years’ report which offers a glimpse of our work over the last five years. ✔ IF WE TALK SCALING in BIOMANUFACTURING, WE NEED TO TALK WORKFORCE 👨🔧 👩🔬 👩💻 👨💼 - Great topic Johann Liebeton ! Everybody who understands something about scaling, will agree with me, that this is not only about getting higher in the #trl / #mrl ladder and bigger tanks (while these are nice to have) - the success of #innovation and #biomanufacturing is 100% dependent on #workforce - talent, educated humans and some help of data science! Recent Bioökonomierat forum summaries were full with claims for scaling - scale-up, etc. Well - it does not help if we have a lot of fermenters, but no people who can operate them, because they are all working somewhere else or simply - don't exist! ... and this is even more pressing on #biobusiness education. Where do we "grow" our future CEOs and Commercial leads? I support the #biobusiness and #bioentrepreneurship courses in Germany, this would be a Gamechanger for us. There is a reason why we are so good in #innovation in #denmark or #USA or #israel Training and education among technology leading #nations, #networks and #societies - will become instrumental moving forward, while we already face a staggering lack of #STEM talent all over the World. Holger Bengs - remember our little article in biospektrum? If you do a deep dive into the most innovative hubs and clusters in the World, that drive the #biomanufacturing agenda, you will find similarities. While many are at #climateweek in NYC - I’m still processing all the momentum in #LatinAmerica from Latimpacto’s #ImpactMinds conference. I shared some of my highlights with Alliance magazine and here’s the TLDR (full link below): 1. the power of storytelling and going beyond the data to connect with the communities we ultimately are here to serve 2. The Catalytic Green Fund that Latimpacto launched in partnership with IDB Lab and The Coca-Cola Company to kick start a #JustTransition 3. What a day it was! Getting the social enterprise community together at the #SEWF2023 is a big venture itself and I'm still inspired by day 1 as we are now in the middle of the second and last day. Day 2 has started (for me online) with inspiring panels on responding to the climate crisis whilst not excluding but embraces indigenous forms of knowledge and migration and entrepreneurial solutions. But I am still mulling over an afternoon session yesterday on social enterprises and the dignity of work. Especially for me the contribution on this great panel from the founder and chair of Specialisterne Danmark (and the wider foundation) Thorkil Sonne. "Fitting square pegs in round holes" was a recurring theme from Thorkil Sonne whose only family story clearly drives his work. How do we transform the focus on typicality to embrace neuro a-typicality, including neurodivergence? Reducing unemployment and, crucially, underemployment of autistic/neuro-atypical people was discussed in the context of social enterprises. Thank you for your words of wisdom and clarity for that resonated with me as someone who is recently on this journey himself. I'm happy that amidst the choice of sessions I joined my Inholland colleague Sonia Vidal at this session. I know we have lots mulling over in our heads now about this and our students going into the professional world... After the session I spoke also to Mike T., a start-up founder in Australia and 2x Tedx speaker about our shared experiences of neurodivergence as professionals in our field. This was what these conferences are all about - connecting through those spontaneous conversations on the side. On neuro a-typicality I also want to commend the SEWF - Social Enterprise World Forum C.I.C. and the venue Kromhouthal in Amsterdam for facilitating 'time out' spaces at the conference itself and going some way to make the experience more inclusive and fair for neuro-atypical people and all whatever their challenges societally or personally. Even the lighting from this picture I took of the panelists is more calming that in many conferences I have been to before. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬: 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲'𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 Over the past two days in Berlin, attending the #Bioeconomy forum of the German Bioeconomy Council, one thing became very clear: everyone wants a successful green transition with a strong bioeconomy - and the conclusion of this ambition was in the air: we must be #bolder and take more risks to avoid stagnation and rejoin the leading ranks in bioeconomy. In the panel I participated in (Blick in die Zukunft), I simplified our current situation by stating that Germany excels at converting public funds into knowledge at our research institutions. However, our great challenge lies in turning this knowledge back into money, i.e., achieving commercial success. This requires courage; we can't afford to remain as risk-averse as we have been in the past! My suggestion is not to place the burden of translating knowledge into profit solely on researchers' shoulders and their entrepreneurial mindset. Instead, we need biotech commercialization specialists to aid them. In this context, I see the introduction of a #BioBusiness / #Bioentrepreneurship master's course in Germany as a small but vital step forward. Universities aren't the only ones who need to be bold. A brave administration is also crucial, to create an environment where startups and companies can thrive based on planning security and lean bureaucracy. Moreover, I advocated for making Germany's bioeconomy more international and appealing. A first step could be to boldly switch to #English for events and public research initiatives, enhancing global accessibility and collaboration. We need to embrace international cooperation more enthusiastically and be so bold as to learn from our international partners, adopting and refining their best practices. In summary, everyone present agreed that it's time for a change. I believe everyone involved in Germany's bioeconomy should see this forum as a call to action to become bolder. As the well-known saying goes in Germany, "Who dares nothing, wins nothing." In Berlin, there was a palpable desire to be winners in the bioeconomy space – so now, it's time for all of us to dare more, to risk more. We have a strong foundation to take significant risks!
