I want to celebrate a win. I want to thank you all and share my gratitude for winning the Otago University 3MT Grand Final doctorate 'People's Choice' in 2023 by an overwhelming margin. Leading people through a thesis in just three minutes (3MT) is not easy. Keep it simple and practice. It is an outstanding win for the Business School and the Doctor of Bus Admin Programme (currently ranked no.1 in the world). My research confronts the critical issue of continuing global biodiversity loss due to a global wildlife investment gap. In just 50 years, the Living Planet Index has collapsed by 70%. The UN is calling for urgent action saying the situation is now critical.   Yet we spend more on cosmetic surgery and cosmetics than securing our children's future with nature. Are our children really ok with what we are taking away from them? Ask them. 'Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini' My translation; it is not my win, but our win.  We at Otago University are designing and testing a new bulk international financial tool that will help your children - it is called the BIC. 5 things I wish I had known about LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) before I started in the industry; 1. Legally, it's not just a "nice to have". It's compulsory in specific sectors. 2. One size doesn't fit all here. Just like a bespoke suit, each LEV system is customised to its space, function and the safety of those working around it. 3. Maintenance is key. Preventive measures can save you from significant future costs. 4. It directly impacts worker health. Underestimating it could mean severe health risks. 5. There's more to LEV than meets the eye. It's a blend of science, engineering and regulations all working in harmony. Delving into the world of LEV is fascinating, yet complex. I am excited to share that the final part of my Doctoral Thesis has just been published! 📚✨ 🙏 a big thank you to my supervisors and collaborators: Konstantinos Tatsis, Roland M. Hohensinn, John Clinton, Eleni Chatzi, Markus Rothacher 🔬 Title: Unscented Kalman Filter-Based Fusion of GNSS, Accelerometer, and Rotation Sensors for Motion Tracking 📄 What is it about? In seismology or structural monitoring, we often face the challenge of measuring vibrations that vary immensly. The motion of interest spans a very broad frequency band, from kHz up to daily or even yearly variations. Additionally, the amplitudes range from being imperceptible to the human eye to visible and permanently displacing fault lines. On top of all that, the traditional translational sensors such as accelerometers and GNSS antennas and receivers are sensitive to rotational motion. Our paper introduces the well-known method, the Unscented Kalman filter, for new applications in seismology and structural monitoring. It enables the fusion of both accelerometer data and GNSS positions while simultaneously correcting for rotation-induced errors. This fusion scheme then provides displacement, velocity and rotation time series across a broad frequency band and in near real-time. 🔗 Link to Paper: https://lnkd.in/dH9FhEAv

Thanks Tima. I agree with your observations. However, as unpopular or disliked as it is, the human development movement maintains that this growing global polarisation is necessary for us to emerge on the other side with true understanding, empathy and compassion. This compassion and empathy that is currently rare, is not a body of cognitive knowledge to be learned. It is a stage of human awakening and development which only occurs when the human being is ready. And every human on the planet is on their own individual journey. The vast majority of the world is at amber- orange stage, with the leading edge being green touching teal). There are a few individuals beyond teal). It is only at teal, do we begin to transcend and include (universal acceptance). We started at red (prehistoric man - Ghangis Kahn). Make no mistake, I am not sharing this in order to promote under-responsibility- as in “well it’s necessary, and beyond our control”. But 12 years of intense self enquiry and standing on the shoulders of giants of the movement enables some of us to see this from a global perspective, from a universal perspective. It’s this perspective that is necessary for us to understand and accept the views and perspectives of others. And without this universal acceptance, we as a race are going around in circles, "tit for tat". We may not have to forget, but we must forgive, in order to go forward.
