Great to be in Westminster today representing Together for Short Lives and joining with partners Hospice UK Marie Curie UK Sue Ryder and National Bereavement Alliance to celebrate #DyingMatters week. It is absolutely crucial, in what is likely to be an election year, that all parties commit to making palliative and end of life care a priority for the next Parliament. For children and young people, this means addressing the £290K funding gap including committing long term to the #ChildrensHospiceGrant. It means strengthening local accountability for delivering to national requirements so we end the postcode lottery in the availability of palliative care for children. And it means developing a workforce with the capacity and skills to care for this increasingly medically complex children. Policy makers must move beyond warm words and take practical action. Because #shortlivescantwait

A new report by cross-party think tank Demos and supported by Grosvenor Hart Homes is published today, highlighting the economic and social impact of failing to join up public services for vulnerable children, young people, and families. Too often the people who most need support in areas such as housing, health, and employment are let down due to the siloed nature of public service delivery, with the knock-on cost of this reaching up to £4.3 billion of public money spent on additional services trying to manage issues rather than prevent them. We are very proud to support this report, being launched in the House of Commons today, with the ambition to bring attention to the issues and stimulate policy innovation that can begin to shift focus from firefighting to prevention. When we conducted a survey, we found that 27% of respondants had no inclination to plan for their end-of-life, and 18% and had never engaged in serious conversation about death. In our experience however, families that have had these discussion experienced less stress when it's time to organise a funeral. You can start small, you could mention a song you'd like to be played at your funeral. Or a photo you'd like to to be used. It can be confronting, but we genuinely believe that these conversations make a huge difference in families. Thank you National Health Care for the Homeless Council for highlighting the accountability we as leaders, and our organizations as a whole, have when it comes to creating the structures, policies, communication pathways, and organizational cultures that allow “self-care” to occur. Self-care without resources - including time - isn’t possible. Self-care without leadership and org policies protecting your right to engage in what sustains you isn’t safe. Focusing on self-care while evading our responsibility to make that accessible, safe, and available to everyone doing the work not only isn’t helpful, it’s harmful. Research on what drives burnout leaves no doubt that this gaslighting of staff results in burnout and attrition as those who love the work are forced to leave orgs that fail them. How about we collectively agree that organizations must provide staff with information on elements of the work environment ensuring staff’s right to self-care doesn’t risk current harm to them, nor to their professional trajectory? Orgs that fail to do so will be fined a ‘gaslighting penalty,’ which will create a resource pool used by staff in orgs that fail them, ensuring staff members get that self-care they deserve. Can someone make that into a WAC or something?
