Proud to see that more and more Romanian consumers have been overwhelmingly supportive, with many viewing the DRS as the most efficient solution for packaging collection and recycling. For us, this is a strong motivation to continue this transformative journey we have embarked upon, together with the Romanian citizens and our partners in the programme. The results of the most recent survey conducted by Kantar, in June 2024, highlight a remarkable rise in the number of consumers adopting our system. 4 out of 5 Romanians have returned DRS packaging at least once, while 57% regularly do it. The awareness of the Deposit Return System among Romanians has continued to increase: 98% of consumers know the system and 92% correctly identify the DRS logo. 81% of Romanians perceive RetuRO as a company that is involved and offers them the necessary tools to recycle, and 75% see it as the best solution for efficient packaging collection and recycling. The results of the new survey, coupled with the hundreds of millions of containers we collect every month, show that most Romanians have long desired an efficient recycling system. The fact that the DRS is already producing the expected effects is further reinforced by local authorities who are noticing fewer DRS containers ending up in landfills, by environmental NGOs who are no longer collecting dozens of bags of such containers from nature, and by all of us, individually, as we already notice fewer containers on the roadside. In 2022, bluesign and SCTI team up to develop the Sustainable Chemistry Index (SCI), a comprehensive tool for assessing environmental impact and creating a common language for the industry. We are excited to announce that bluesign and SCTI are donating the SCI to ZDHC, advancing sustainable chemical management as part of the Chemicals to Zero (CTZ-A) program. 🚨 Hazardous chemicals in the clothing industry are still a major problem. Despite efforts to improve, the fashion and textile industries still face challenges due to inconsistent regulations and lack of reliable data, which affects the environment and makes it difficult to maintain transparent practices. However, companies continue to innovate. bluesign technologies ag and SCTI (Sustainable Chemistry for the Textile Industry) created the Sustainable Chemistry Index (SCI), a tool designed to evaluate the environmental impact of chemicals used in the textile industry. This tool establishes a consistent standard or "common language" for discussing sustainability in the industry. bluesign and SCTi are giving the SCI to ZDHC and it will become a part of ZDHC Roadmap to Zero Programme, which is aimed at improving chemical management in the textile industry. We're on the brink of a world where "green fashion" isn't a niche - it's the norm. It is a world in which we encourage and create a circular economy through a cross-industry team effort. A world where resources are reused and recycled, reducing waste and environmental impact. Together, we're redefining the fashion cycle. And this is a trend that won't go out of style.

It is great to see SCTI donating its Sustainable Chemicals Index(SCI)- a comprehensive tool for assessing the environmental impact of textile chemicals- to Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC). I was part of the early beginning of both the SCI and SCTI about 5 years back. The progress made by now in eliminating or reducing these hazardous chemicals and their environmental impact has been good. Still a long way to go for the textile industry. But good first steps.

Let's keep the #EU's waste collection ambition high! UNESDA has joined several industry stakeholders and NGOs in urging the French government to support #DepositReturnSystems (#DRS), ahead of today’s COREPER meeting and the EU Environment Ministers meeting on Monday.   More specifically, we ask France – and the other EU Member States - to support the obligation to set up a DRS in each Member State and to only provide exemptions based on a 90% collection rate. We also call on them to remove the possibility to set up multiple DRS at a sub-national level.   DRS have a key role to play in supporting Member States in achieving a #CircularEconomy for #BeveragePackaging. Approximately 42,000 cremations are performed annually in Flanders and Brussels, which is why, at the request of the VNOC (the Flemish network of public crematoria), we sought a sustainable alternative to metal transport urns. Driven by the growing demand for environmentally conscious solutions and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions associated with urn production. The cradle-to-gate CO2-footprint of the OceanUrn® is 21 times lower than those of metal urns. Up to 12 million tonnes of plastic disappear into our oceans every year. That is why we developed OceanUrn®, made from discarded fishing nets and ropes from the fishing industry that are collected before they would be thrown into the sea. These are ground into plastic pellets from which we can then produce the urns. Funeral directors can return the OceanUrn® after use. Funico will then grind these urns again and with the plastic granules we can produce new ecological urns. This new urn represents a leap forward in sustainability and highlights that there is always room for innovation and improvement, even in the most traditional sectors. I leave for Sweden next week to visit relatives and to travel with my mother into the far north of the country, Sápmi country. One thing I always appreciate about Sweden, and the Nordics in general, is their commitment to sustainability and the environment. My cousin who lives in Stockholm is what I would call a militant recycler, as are most Swedes. She has never owned a car, doesn’t even have a driver’s license. I’m very interested in the circular economy—designing products for longer use, reducing waste, increased recycling, reuse and energy efficiency.  Sweden, come to learn, is also a leader in the circular economy. Starting this year food waste must be sorted from other waste—by law. They have a target of zero waste by 2029. This article summarizes very well what Sweden is contributing to the circular economy and moving beyond just recycling as a way of mitigating our waste. #circularity #sustainability #sweden
