People who want to rush LLMs and VLMs into production systems often don't know anything about security (or just don't care). Now, there is this thing called an attack surface, which is the total area of exposure that could be targeted in a cybersecurity attack. In the lab, you probably don't even think about it. But in real settings, you really want to make this surface as small as possible, as your adversaries are often extremely creative and will stick their nose into every possible little hole to see if they can take something in or out or cause any sort of damage. The issue with LLMs and VLMs is that they have a HUGE attack surface, as their operational envelope is itself huge, and their failure modes are hardly understood. Hence the need to think long and hard on how to package and integrate these models into production-grade systems, especially those that contain sensitive data or provide critical services. #llms #vlms #security #attacks #attacksurface
