Dana Territo's article explores whether consuming green salads daily can delay cognitive decline. According to a study by researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, eating just one serving of leafy green vegetables each day may help preserve memory and cognitive abilities as people age. The study, published in Neurology on Dec. 20, emphasizes the potential benefits of adding greens to one's diet for promoting brain health.
Lead author Dr. Martha Clare Morris, a nutritional epidemiologist at Rush, suggests that incorporating leafy greens could be a straightforward way to support cognitive function. The research, conducted as part of the Rush Memory and Aging Project, involved nearly 1,000 older adults without dementia. Those who consumed at least one serving of leafy greens daily showed a slower rate of cognitive decline compared to those who rarely ate such vegetables. The study indicates that these benefits might correspond to a cognitive age roughly 11 years younger.
Beyond potential cognitive benefits, leafy greens are recognized for their contributions to overall health. They are rich in vitamin K, which supports bone health and may help prevent inflammatory diseases. Moreover, their high antioxidant content makes them valuable for cancer prevention, while their fiber content aids in digestion regulation.
However, while the study suggests an association between leafy green consumption and reduced cognitive decline, further research is needed to establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship.
