YOU CAN'T TICKLE YOURSELF BECAUSE YOUR BRAIN KNOWS IT'S COMING You can't tickle yourself because your brain knows it's coming. But when someone else does it, even the thought can make you laugh. This illustrates the importance of having someone "tickling" your narratives occasionally. As a client recently shared, we sometimes get trapped in narratives that bring us down and lead to poor decisions and interactions. In those moments, our internal dialogue is so powerful that it feels like the only truth. That's when we need someone to "tickle" our thoughts. Researchers studied 16 participants using three different approaches: 1. Thinking alone 2. Receiving opinions and advice 3. Working with a coach who provides reflections and open-ended questions As shown, the coaching approach (3) leads to the highest brain activity. WHY EMOTIONS MATTER: BEYONF STRUCTURED PLANS It's not uncommon for executives to start a session completely open about their emotions—sharing fears, disappointments, and frustrations. Yet, by the following week, they often return with a different tone: "I apologize for being so emotional last week, but now I've structured everything and know what I need to do." There's a benefit to this strategy, as it signals to the body that there’s no immediate danger, allowing the person to exit what we call "survival mode." In survival mode, the sole objective is to survive. In this state, you don't consider whether you're eating well, sleeping enough, or thinking strategically or creatively. Therefore, stepping out of this mode is crucial. However, rationalizing all emotions can be dangerous. Like everything in life, the best decisions come from a place of balance. Emotions tell us a lot about ourselves—our values and deepest desires. Neglecting these insights, no matter how logical or structured our plans are, can lead to failure because we overlook what’s truly important to us. CREATED FUTURE vs DEFAULT FUTURE  CAN YOU DO THAT ALONE? SURE, BUT WILL YOU?  There are two key factors to consider when you want to think and act towards your created future: 1. The time you dedicate to self-reflection 2. Confirmation bias: This is the most fascinating part of all my neuroscience studies. You, me, and everyone else constantly seeks to confirm what we already believe, often unconsciously. We don't even realize we're doing it. We often already have answers to all our questions. By heart: why we don't get promoted, why we can't commit to exercising, why we need to wait to make a career move, why we don't save money, why we don't plan financially, why we don't spend more time with our family... That's why we need to ask ourselves different questions, ones that challenge our most ingrained beliefs. Yes, I am humble enough to believe that any of us can do this, but the fact is, I haven't met anyone who does because it requires a level of personal development that I strive for. That's why I have a coach too, to push me to see beyond and create this future by diving deep within myself. Without knowing ourselves deeply, we don't have the material to create this future with high levels of alignment, contentment, and empowerment (the foundation of my methodology). Because let's be honest, in the hustle and bustle of life, we're not stopping to think about this vision with depth. CHALLENGING UNQUESTIONED BEHAVIORS - Unveiling the Ham Tradition A woman prepares Christmas dinner by halving a leg of ham before cooking it. Her husband asks, "Why cut it in half? Does it cook better?" She answers, "I don’t really know, that’s just what I’ve always done. I saw my mother doing that when I was a girl." Later, at dinner, the in-laws inquire about the practice, to which she responds, "I don’t really know. Your grandma used to do that – so it’s just something I’ve always done – there must be a reason for it!” They visit Grandma, who explains, “When your mother was a girl, my oven was very small, and I couldn’t fit the whole leg in without cutting it in half.” How often do you go without questioning the why behind what you have been doing? Many of our actions become unquestioned habits that we perform without scrutiny. The story about the ham illustrates and provokes us to think about the previously unthinkable. A coaching process is really about understanding what drives our choices and beliefs, reflecting, and being more intentional and conscious about them. The more you know your whys, the more authentic and powerful you feel.
