Shhh. Don't tell. Want advice from an expert on how to succeed in a competition to design a decarbonized school building that responds to equity and resilience? Watch my interview with the amazing Nate Heckman, AIA, a professor and technical expert. The 2024 Architecture at Zero competition challenge is to design a new building on a middle school campus in East Los Angeles (East LA), California. The new building will replace relocatable classrooms and includes science labs, art classroom, maker space, outdoor learning environments, and a teacher workroom. While the competition program location is Griffith STEAM Magnet Middle School, note that this is an ideas competition and is not a “real” project. Deadline for entries is December 16, 2024. Special thanks to all the people who made this competition a reality: Anna LaRue, Nicki Dennis Stephens, Nate Heckman, AIA, Dave Intner, Dustin Johnson, Tala Daya, Ph.D., Southern California Edison (SCE), American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), AIACA, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, California Energy Commission, IBPSA-USA, ASHRAE San Jose Chapter, California Architectural Foundation, AIA Los Angeles, Carrie Brown, Alexander Fonseca, SoCalGas, Angela McDonald https://lnkd.in/gcnVQDxS

Comment - Dialogue by design Oliver Moore of Design Engine Architects looks at how the design of Sixth Forms is evolving to harness the ability of non-hierarchical classrooms to foster more communal dialogue and learning Dialogue is fundamental to the way that Design Engine Architects approach the design process. As designers we will seek to develop a response to our client’s brief through a structured series of conversations with project stakeholders, including the eventual users of the building. The benefit of investing time in this early stage is a resultant design based upon a better understanding of those end users’ values; against which the completed building’s performance will be judged and its success appraised. There is a parallel between this dialogic approach to design and a trend observed among our education clients. A Message to All Architecture Students To all current architecture students, here are some quick notes on your Monday morning to kickstart your creative and critical thinking. Right now, you're probably still in the stages of your projects where you're exploring the brief and coming to terms with what you could design in your chosen site. Take a step back. Read up on current global challenges and truly dedicate your time on working to produce a scheme that meets existing and future global challenges. Buckminster Fuller said, "Think Global, Act Local". Now, I know I've cited this before... but it truly is one of the unlocks. And the sooner you start pushing yourself to tackle these problems, the quicker you'll develop as a designer in architecture school. #architecturestudent #architectureschool #architecture #designsolvingglobalchallenges #architecturaldesign #architecturaleducation

The first time I sent out this questionnaire was in March 2022 for my book on 'How to Make the Best Out of your architectural career..." I got 40 responses from students, technologists, graduates, and architects on different topics/ areas of concern in architecture. Now, I am sending out the questionnaire again in March 2024 to draw inferences and make conclusions on lingering concerns, and to discover if there has been a change within the past two years from diverse opinions. Please endeavour to fill out the questionnaire. The answers are solely for the purpose of this book. To fill out the questionnaire, use the link in the comments session. #architecture #Architectureschool #architecturesecrets #Architects #students #graduates #associates #architectscorner

Can you build a global leader in social goods based on just three design principles created by an amateur? The architecture firm MASS has. MASS stands for Model of Architecture Serving Society. They have three rules, given to them by Dr. Paul Farmer. Farmer was not an architect at all. He was a medical doctor caring for AIDS patients in Haiti and Africa. Farmer originally asked the founders of MASS to build a clinic. Their first design looked like an army building. In response, Farmer gave the founders of MASS three rules: --A building must be beautiful. --A building must encourage natural air flow. --Creating the building must employ local people. These three rules have lead MASS to create stunning, effective, affordable buildings around the world. The work started in places like Africa and the Caribbean but has come home to places like New Jersey and Texas. These three rules have also helped lead the firm to win the 2022 AIA Architecture Firm Award. It's not a very fancy award name. However, according to the press release, it is the highest honor the AIA bestows on an architecture practice. The award recognizes a firm that has consistently produced distinguished architecture for at least 10 years. What's the moral of this story? In building public goods like hospitals and schools, design matters. And it might not be the designs that you're used to. https://buff.ly/3xh9ei1 #design #SocialImpact #innovation

MENTORS NEEDED! My students at UTA CAPPA are working on their final projects for the semester and could use your expertise and input! There are two ways you can help: Architectural Engineering senior studio - designing an innovation center, you can come for an hour or be a final presentation critic. Emphasis is on structure, systems. Architecture sophomore studio - designing an artist’s atelier, you can come for an hour or be a final presentation critic. Emphasis is on design principles. If you’re interested on either one, let me know so I can send you more details! We would love to have you! #mentorshipmatters #representationmatters
