This is the time of year one sees all types of webinars and trainings directed towards those in nonprofit fundraising to help them raise more money as year-end campaigns begin in a couple of months. “We can help you raise more money!” More money! Instead of that, I suggest we focus on relationships. Relationships that show our donors value, respect, and gratitude. Relationships that don’t make them feel like an ATM (as we used to say back in the day). If we work on relationship-building throughout the year, year-end fundraising campaigns not only make more sense, they can be quite successful for your nonprofit. Yet imagine receiving a call to ask you to donate from an organization you love but haven’t heard from since the last fundraising campaign. You get it. We all get it. While others are focusing on raising more and more money, my hope is that you can put increased focus on those you are asking to be in relationship with for your organization. Do you donate to nonprofit organizations? Do you support friends who are leading nonprofits? Both are good! Do you know what would be even better? Often times the biggest thing you can give your #nonprofit friends, is an endorsement among your network that they are #trustworthy and worth the #investment. I have countless stories where a friend intentionally opened the door to their network and those individuals turned into donors, supporters and even board members. If you are friends with a nonprofit leader, think about some ways you might introduce them and the work they are doing to your network. It will be an accelerant to their #mission. #mondaythoughts #fuelmission

If your inbox has more emails from internal constituents - colleagues, board members, your boss - then it’s time to do some outreach. You simply won’t find new philanthropic dollars if you are not making new contacts. Be driven by outreach. Every day. Cast a wide net. Don’t talk yourself out of any conversations with any donors. Send that email. Hold that Zoom meeting. Make that call. Invite someone to coffee. If you find yourself replying to more internal emails than external ones, it’s time to evaluate your strategy. Donors aren't just going to hand over their hard-earned cash without seeing concrete evidence their donations will actually make a real difference. They want to know their money is going towards causes that speak to them, and will have a measurable impact. It's time to stop beating around the bush and start showing donors the impact of their generosity. You have got to show donors what sets your organization apart, how their donations are being used, and the long-term effects their gifts are having on the community. That means transparency, storytelling, and clear communication about the impact of every single dollar. It's time to break down those barriers. If you're a small shop nonprofit CEO or a small shop fundraiser and you know you need to build your fundraising program, but you don't know where to start, here's a suggestion: Pick up the phone. Take a look at the donations that have come in over the last week and personally call every single one of those donors. What do you say to them? - THANK YOU - Tell them about the kind of life change (outcomes vs. outputs) their generosity is creating. - Ask them why your org is important to them and how they got involved. - Ask them if they have any feedback for you or your org. - Tell them about ways they can become more involved. - Thank them again. - Say goodbye, hang up, and write a detailed contact report (don't neglect this!) Then, the next day, pull up the list of donations over the past 24 hours, and repeat all of the above. Then, get your board involved in making thank you calls. Of course, building out an effective fundraising enterprise will comprise many many more steps that require increasing sophisitication, effort, and staffing. Getting a certification or a badge isn't going to make you a better fundraiser. Talking to donors is. Do you serve on a nonprofit board? Call a friend who might be interested in your organization and tell them why you volunteer. Then say: "I'd love to learn about some of your community interests. I'm not sure we've ever talked about it." Do you work for a nonprofit? Call a donor who increased their giving in December and thank them. Ask them: "What inspired your generosity?" Here’s what I’ve learned in the last few years working with nonprofits. The most important thing for any nonprofit to go beyond surviving and start THRIVING, is to nurture their donor relationships. Drop the flattery. They can smell it a mile off. It’s fake. It’s dishonest. It’s rude. Genuine connection goes beyond a weekly email. It’s the kind of relationship you’d expect to have with a friend. You know their first names. You know what’s happening in their lives. You understand their passions and can show how your work aligns with their values. And you say thank you when they donate. Successful fundraising is all about successful relationships. That pit in the stomach when you send out an appeal? Gone. Because you know that your friend, the donor, will give if she can.
