In an era where change is the only constant, how can organisations harness ancient wisdom and modern frameworks like the Viable System Model to thrive amidst chaos? Have you experienced or observed the pitfalls of frequent reorganisation firsthand? Share your insights and learnings. #LeadershipInsights #ChangeManagement #AdaptationStrategy #ViableSystemModel #StrategicForesight #OrganizationalLearning #TeamworkEvolution #AncientWisdomModernSolutions #ContinuousImprovement #BusinessEvolution
How often have you seen organisations respond to new challenges by reorganising, only to face confusion, inefficiency, and demoralisation? This question, prompted by the timeless wisdom of Charlton Ogburn Jr, is as relevant today as it was 67 years ago: "We trained very hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganised. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganising and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress, while producing confusion, inefficiency and demoralisation" - Charlton Ogburn Jr (1957) As I've written before, we can learn much from the wisdom of the past. Arbiter's astute observation perfectly captures a trap that many modern organisations still fall into - constant reorganisation in the face of new challenges. However, Arbiter observed that this approach only leads to confusion and inefficiency. Stafford Beer's Viable System Model (VSM) offers a framework for understanding how organisations can adapt effectively. For a system to remain viable, it must be able to learn, self-regulate, and evolve in response to internal and external factors. This aligns with the idea that leaders should foster continuous evolution rather than relying on large-scale transformations. I have often spoken of the importance of foresight in strategic development. Our ability to forecast and visualise the future is paramount in strategic development, and understanding the timing and nature of adaptations required is equally crucial. By cultivating a culture of learning, experimentation, and incremental improvement, leaders can help their organisations adapt to changing circumstances while maintaining stability. This approach enables teams to anticipate and prepare for future challenges rather than simply reacting. The next time your organisation faces a new situation, consider how you can leverage the collective wisdom of your team to chart a path forward that balances adaptability and stability. By doing so, you'll be better positioned to navigate future uncertainties. #leadership #change #adaptation #viablesystemmodel #foresight #strategicdevelopment

Keynote Speaker | Advisor | C-Suite Executive | Board Ready --- Leveraging my experience in transformation to help orgs embark on large-scale change and get it right. I don't just talk transformations, I've lived them.
I just read this HBR article by Alex Liu. https://lnkd.in/eyK78suh Lui asks… “If transformations have become never-ending — and the vast majority of them fail anyway — has the notion of transformation become obsolete?” He suggests… that no, they aren’t obsolete, but they are taking the form of more of a “regenerative transformation” which … “is one that more harmoniously links the operations and performance of modern business with the broader ecosystems"... Lui describes regenerative biz as those that “…lead with courage, prioritize action, and view business and society as inextricably connected and they progress on a long-term vision, not knee-jerk tweaks. Regenerative leaders ask: · How could we invest in our people to create a long-term impact? · How could we work together differently to build a different kind of business? And as we all know, culture eats strategy…. every…single… time. Is your business regenerative, he asks? · Do your teams really talk to each other? · Do they understand the impact their decisions have on their cross-functional colleagues? · Do they know when they are forcing costly changes onto the rest of the business? · Do your teams have the training and life-long learning mindset needed to upskill? · Does everyone know about the customer insights you’re unlocking · Does everyone understand their role in driving a customer-first culture and how that will unlock performance? These types of questions just underscore what I have written about here before… that the plans have to be detailed, they have to be cross-functional, and you have to think about all the puts and takes and each impact for ALL the areas of the business. He concludes… “When you build a culture on collaboration and set the expectation that information will be freely shared, people are able to understand, accept, and fuel powerful changes, instead of fearing or rebelling against change. When you change the dialogue from “We can’t do this because…” to “What must be true to achieve this objective?” you unlock the ability to think more broadly, more end to end, and more as truly regenerative business leaders. So many businesses I have worked with don’t have the “how can we” perspective of which Lui speaks. That can be for many reasons. Overworked. Understaffed. They could have been conditioned to “suffer” with the status quo because when they asked for help in the past and it was never given … or there might be an entrenched old guard who likes things as they are and shrugs off the need for change. To break out of the “but that’s the way we’ve always done it” to become a truly regenerative and evolving business, you do need to ask the tough questions and focus on changing the underlying culture to one that thrives on solving challenges for all customers internal and external.
