This morning, where many of us wonder how to hope for a better democracy, one place to invest time and effort: how work can prepare us to be better small-d democrats. Our discussion earlier this week at Aspen Ideas.

At B Lab, we create standards, policies, tools, and programs to transform capitalism for the benefit of all people, communities, and the planet. A key part of our mission is shifting the behavior of business. By adopting new governance models and improving social and environmental performance in line with our standards, businesses not only make a positive difference but also set powerful examples for others, paving the way for broader change. But we don’t stop there: across our network, B Lab runs local and regional programs to equip leaders with practical tools for continuous improvement. A standout initiative is the Impact Improvement Program led by B Lab US & Canada in 2023. This eight-week program, facilitated by DEI mindset coaches from Beyond Inclusion Group, helps B Corps explore racial equity practices and policies. Participants committed 3 ½ hours each week to learn about employee wealth-building, fair-chance hiring, inclusive recruitment and retention, and setting goals for accountability. We recently shared ORCID’s efforts to expand communities of practice in Latin America, and now we continue to make strides to grow a region- and sector-based community of practice approach. This work is driven by our network of partners and consortia, which ties into one of ORCID’s four strategic priorities outlined in From Vision to Value: ORCID’s 2022–2025 Strategic Plan—Increasing Global Participation. In honor of #HispanicHeritageMonth, we are spotlighting Bain & Company's 2021 report, conducted in collaboration with the Stanford Latino Entreprenuership Initiative and the Latino Donor Collaborative. "Latino entrepreneurs have the capacity and capability to drive massive growth for the US economy, but they need the funds to do it. Our research suggests that the traditional supply chain of capital is broken for Latino-owned businesses. Although Latinos are contributing ever-increasing amounts of capital to our financial system, the funds are not flowing back to scale Latino-owned businesses. It's up to investors to lead the way in closing this gap," said Hernan S., Head of Bain & Company's Global Performance Improvement practice.
