Delighted to shed light on an event that signifies a milestone in #AustraliaChinaRelations 🇦🇺🇨🇳. Our Prime Minister, Hon Anthony Albanese MP, visited China from Nov 4-7, 2023, at the invitation of Premier Li Qiang. This visit commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first-ever visit by an Australian Prime Minister to China, originally made by the Hon Edward Gough Whitlam. While there, Prime Minister Albanese engaged in meaningful talks with several top-tier Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Chairman Zhao Leji of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. These discussions ran the gamut from China-Australia relations to regional, and international matters. It was heartening to hear that the Annual Leaders' Meeting between Premier Li and Prime Minister Albanese was resumed and met with success. Both leaders re-emphasised their commitment to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that connotes mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, and stable development in accordance with the 1972 Joint Communiqué on Diplomatic Relations. The leaders openly discussed their differences, signifying that despite those, our bilateral relationship has the potential to flourish while safeguarding national interests, if navigated judiciously. They also echoed the importance of political dialogue, recognising the improving stabilisation and development in the bilateral political relationship. The reinstatement of the China-Australia High-Level Dialogue, the impetus on bilateral trade, commitment to climate change, energy, and environment, and emphasis on people-to-people links and political dialogue all herald a constructive future for the two nations. A nod to the continuous commitment to the UN Charter, WTO compliances and collaboration via international platforms like the United Nations, G20, APEC, East Asia Summit, and under the RCEP, speaks volumes about our shared vision for reinforcing global standards. This visit signifies a crucial step in fortifying the partnership between Australia and China. We look forward to the uninterrupted evolution of this relationship to benefit both nations. https://lnkd.in/gjBrCuqX #Australia #China #InternationalPolitics #Diplomacy #globalrelations

What can we expect when Xi and Biden meet tomorrow? Both sides have been putting in the legwork to make sure the meeting goes smoothly. What happens after is less clear. When Xi and Biden last met in Indonesia, it took just three months for the "Bali spirit" to come crashing down (literally - RIP "spy balloon"). This time round, the stumbling block is more predictable, but potentially even trickier: an upcoming US election in which no-one can afford to be seen as soft on China. With some expert insight from Kenddrick Chan, Edward Knight and I look at what it would take to really put a floor under the relationship in this Tony Blair Institute for Global Change blog. https://lnkd.in/epNtmNVz
