I had a fascinating chat on the PRmoment podcast with Rebecca Grant, UK CEO and global chief brand officer of BCW on the implications of Schwartz’s values theory on communications recently. We spoke about the importance of values in successful comms campaigns and how they impacted a person’s decision. We went part history lesson, part comms theory, part future gazing with this one, and it was a really interesting discussion. The aim of this 30-minute podcast was to leave you knowing more about the basics of Schwartz’s values theory, why it matters to communications and why it could matter to your team. There’s also interesting insight into the research BCW has done to take Schwartz’s theory and how to apply it to your comms. 5 things I’ve learned in 24+ years of working in PR + communications: 1. Trust the process (or T the P, as I say). Things are ready when they’re good + ready. 2. A considered response > a lightning-fast response. Pause, breathe, think (and spell check twice!) before you reply to that email. 3. Relationships are everything in this business. Always choose honesty + transparency + integrity. 4. The only constant is change, and evolving with that change is a must. Media consumption has certainly changed, and so how + who we pitch has changed as well. But content is content, and it's still being consumed. 5. You figure out how to figure it out (this gem c/o James Alvich). Google is your friend, friends are your friend, books are your friend, mistakes are your friend.
