Weekend Job Search Thought: This may be a completely terrible take..... If it is please feel free to rip me for it in the comments with a funny (but appropriate) joke or meme. I'm really coming around to the conclusion that there's an inverse relationship in job searching with the time spent trying to "out think the room" versus "doing the basics really well" and the amount of success you will have. I've seen so much badddddd advice floating around this week from job search "thought leaders" and corporate recruiters with all kinds of nonsense and over thought "tips and tricks" on what "really will make the difference and stand out". The reality (or at least what I've experienced as reality from my seat as a recruiter and a former job seeker) is that very few people actually do the basics really well when it comes to job searching. Resume Basics Include: -Name, phone, email, and LI profile at the top (in the US, don't include a photo or personal details like married or number of children). -clean resume format that's easy for the reader to scan quickly. -1 line sentence descriptor for each company you've worked at. -focused content / achievements relevant to what you're applying for. -Leave off subjective details like "detail oriented", "great multi-tasker", or "talented communicator". Add things like what software / apps you're competent in related to the role. -quantifiable impact or value driven in your prior roles. -Leave off graduation dates from high school, college, or graduate degrees (no one needs to know when). -focus on just your past 10 years of experience or less (unless you're trying to land a Sr. Leadership or Executive Role). Job Search Basics Include: -Embrace the why you're searching for a job (bad manager, lack of career development, money, WFH, ect) and let that drive your job search. -Focusing your time on applying for specific roles that fit your narrow targeted criteria based on your why. Yes, job searching is a bit of a aggregate game, but applying to 500 jobs and see what falls out of the tree is the wrong strategy. -Research the company and interviewers really well before interviews. -Have 3-5 specific questions unique to each company you interview with -Utilize kind candor (#simonsinek) .... Good hiring managers and recruiters respect it and will value you more because of it. -Do high leverage networking with your target companies None of these basics are difficult or an attempt to "out think the room" and yet less than 10% of the job applications / candidates I've every worked with do all of these basics really well. Focus on the basics and you'll do well over time with your search. P.S.
