We call on the government to put children first in our Pre-Budget 2024 Submission. We want them to prioritise Ireland's most vulnerable children and families. Priority three: Children with Additional Needs. What the government needs to do: 🏥 Adequately resource Primary Care, and Children's Disability Network Team services. 👨⚕️ Establish a dedicated child Public Health Nursing service. 📋 Clear communication to parents on timelines for assessment AND intervention. ✴️ One point of contact for parents of children with additional needs (diagnosed or suspected). CDI's deep-rooted expertise, knowledge, and grassroots experience empower its advocacy for much-needed resources to transform the lives of children and families. Today a range of stakeholders in Aboriginal child protection will come together in Parramatta for the two-day AbSec Sector Forum. The forums are held quarterly, offering a chance to hear the latest industry news and seek solutions to ongoing issues. AbSec CEO John Leha described the forum as a critical element in leading sector reform for and by Aboriginal people, communities and Aboriginal community-controlled organisations. “These events are highly anticipated by people throughout the sector, from the governmental policy makers to the people on the frontlines providing services,” Mr Leha said. “It is a crucial networking opportunity, helping to forge the connections that are vitally important in a complex industry where partnerships are essential. “More than anything, it is a place where the people who know the most about the difficulties many Aboriginal families face can both listen and be heard.” NSW Minister for Families and Communities Kate Washington will be among those present. “These forums are always an excellent opportunity to hear from those on the frontline about the problems, challenges and opportunities ahead,” Minister Washington said. “I'm keen to continue connecting and building lasting partnerships across the sector, so that together we can improve outcomes for children, families and communities." Other attendees will include Judge Ellen Skinner, president of the NSW Children’s Court, who will give an update of the impact the Active Efforts policy has had on court proceedings. The Victorian Government acknowledges the impact of historical abuse and neglect that too many Victorian children experienced while placed in institutional care. The Victorian Government is committed to providing ongoing support to these Victorians and their families to address the impact of past practices. This includes working with Pre-1990 Care Leavers and key stakeholders to develop the Victorian Historical Care Leavers Redress Scheme. The recent release of the "Children in care: complaints to the Ombudsman 2019–2023" report highlighted the harmful effects of Oranga Tamariki Care and Protection residences on young people. My article in The Conversation explores the urgent question; what is the purpose of Oranga Tamariki Care and Protection residences? A place to "care" for and "protect" some of the most vulnerable young people in Aotearoa, or a place of containment and punishment? I have been working with VOYCE - Whakarongo Mai, Clive Aspin and Ema Tokolahi over the past number of years developing research which highlights the stories of care experienced youth and advocates for the systemic implementation of a trauma-informed model of care across Oranga Tamariki Care and Protection residences to address the complex needs of youth in care.
