A few weeks late, but I’m excited to share a personal milestone: After 9 years, I am officially an Australian citizen! Australia has welcomed me with open arms, and I am deeply grateful. Pearl’s Second Opinion® Radiologic AI Software – Bringing color to your radiographs! Explaining nuances in the greyscale of 2D, black-and-white radiographs has always been difficult for dentist and patient communication. Part of the difficulty stems from the infrequency with which most patients encounter radiographs, typically only during sporadic visits to the dental chair. Moreover, while the trained human eye, that of the dentist, can discern approximately 30-50 shades of grey, the digital realm of radiography assigns specific color codes to each pixel, potentially representing hundreds of shades of grey. This provides inherent limitations to the dentists’ diagnostic capabilities. With Pearl’s Second Opinion® the software technology, has caught up to the hardware. Leveraging computer vision technology, Second Opinion® has been meticulously trained on vast datasets comprising millions of radiographs. It excels in deciphering hundreds of shades of grey, enabling it to pinpoint subtle dental pathologies and detect elusive issues in X-rays, such as incipient caries or early indicators of periapical radiolucency. These findings are vividly highlighted in vibrant colors on the radiographs. Additionally, Second Opinion® provides a "Tooth Segmentation Tool," delineating the various tissues of the tooth, including enamel, dentin, and cementum in distinct colors. Seeing their x-rays in full color transforms the patient experience akin to transitioning from a black-and-white TV to a high-definition color TV. This visual clarity empowers dentists to effectively communicate nuances, such as the depth of a cavity or the presence of a concealed fracture, fostering active patient engagement and informed decision-making. As patients grasp these subtleties, they not only gain trust in their dentist's expertise but also feel empowered to prioritize their oral health. It’s a funny thing to see yourself on camera, particularly if it’s not something you are used to! My generation dodged a childhood filled with smartphones and TikTok (luckily, I think), but in this case, it’s for a great cause, so I don’t mind.
