When it comes to building a culture of sustainability, there's no checklist to get you there quickly—it has to be a part of your entire organization. Recently, Milliken & Company spoke to attendees at the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) Sustainability Conference about building a sustainability culture. Here are three takeaways from the talk: 🌎 Set targets—how do you know where you will land if you don't know what you're shooting for? 🌎 Make an impact—pick a project and do it; you must start building momentum. 🌎 Report transparently—report the facts (the good and bad) using science, verification and proof.

One of the greatest fundamental conundrums of the sustainability movement is whether we have to keep building good, new stuff as fast as we can (to replace old, bad stuff), or wether in fact science demands that we stop building altogether if we’re to have a chance at a liveable world.

Last week, myself and members of the One Earth Leadership Consortium, visited Interface’s HQ in Atlanta. Interface, a carpet and flooring manufacturer, has set the audacious goal of becoming the most sustainable company in the world and I expect them to achieve it. Why – because they have been on the sustainability journey for over 25 years and have created a culture that supports their strategy of sustainability and beyond. Interface emphasizes design and that it is never a question of sustainability or financial profits. If they can’t achieve both, then it is a design issue to be solved – be it the design of a product, their manufacturing process, or their way to market. They also focus on life-centered design from carbon neutral and carbon negativeproducts to envisioning their factories as forests. As part of their Take Back Climate initiative, Interface is partnering with Biomimicry 3.8, in redesigning their factories to provide some of the same ecosystemic values as a forest: filter water, clean air, store carbon, and provide habitats for local plants and animals. More than a sustainability agenda, transforming their factories and creating carbon negative products emerges from Interface’s regenerative approach and their vision of business leading the reversal of climate change.
