Female #Entrepreneurs Face an Invisible Barrier to Funds https://lnkd.in/eYWfFnZQ Women seeking funds for their new businesses run up against “third party bias” among #investors who are more likely to withhold support because they tend to believe that other investors prefer ventures led by men, according to an Academy of Management Journal article. The biased investors recognize that ventures that gain wider financial support are more likely to succeed. The problem gets worse for women with groundbreaking ideas for new businesses, according to Zhenyu Liao of Northeastern University, Jack Zhang of Nanyang Technological University, Nan Wang of Lingnan University, William Bottom of Washington University in St. Louis, Dirk Deichmann of Erasmus University, and Pok Man Tang of the University of Georgia. This is because investors often unconsciously make slanted judgments that women-led novel ventures violate common logic and normal business practices. Such biased judgments serve as a powerful cue for investors to believe whether such ventures would be favored by their peer investors. #aom2023

Women...wealth creation...sustainable investing. These are all the things that inspire me every day in my advocacy for financial equity. As an impact investor, I've been itching to write on this topic for Wealth with Sophia on Tatler Asia's Front & Female for far too long. And voila! The day has come. This article has added meaning for me because it was impact investing which actually deepened my own investing life. 🌟 One of the core pillars of Criterion's strategic plan is 'Value the Future of Equality'. It seeks to encourage investors to assign value in their investments today, based on a hopeful future in which social justice and gender equity has been achieved. A key example is the process of designing investment theses - so we thought we'd share a bit about our thinking and approach, in case it's helpful to anyone reading. Criterion’s process for outlining an investment thesis is premised on a powerful vision of a future that is hopeful and equitable, and provides a pathway for investing in it. The investment thesis looks at trends in sectors and geographies to define that future and then looks back to the present to ask: “to capture that future, what do you invest in now?” The process provides a strategic framework to align our investment ideas, possibilities, and implementation. It is distinct from but complementary to a theory of change, that names what change we are creating in the world. An investment thesis names the social, economic, and cultural forces contributing to a positive future.  An investment thesis is not a measurement tool. It is an investment tool for seeing opportunities differently. It can help highlight systems interventions alongside investment opportunities to ensure the future we invest in materializes. It may also reframe key challenges in a region or market as previously overlooked investment opportunities. Our process is not static and evolves based on our experiences, successes and lessons learned, changing power and market dynamics, and constantly evolving trends. It speaks to what we value now, and what we will value in the future. An important part of the process is to embrace flexibility and adaptability.  Criterion’s process for an investment thesis is comprised of the following core components: 1) researching current economies, underlying factors, and economic trends, 2) evaluating capital markets and identifying how power can shift in these markets, 3) mapping an investable universe that realizes the future we want to achieve, and 4) areas of implementation for investment decision-making, measurement, and due diligence that reflect the changes in the system that are necessary for achieving the future vision. Our approach examines the current realities and analyzes power and bias to reframe obstacles and challenges into opportunities that bet on a future others want and can see themselves in.
