Volunteers from the Loving Hearts Organization and PS 105 PTA joined our Cancer Support Group gathering at the Cancer Center, braving the high temperatures to teach our cancer patients and survivors the art of making balloon flowers. Our heartfelt appreciation to Volunteers from Loving Hearts Organization and PS 105 PTA who shared their time and talent with our patients. The patients crafted beautiful flowers that were then gifted to our physicians and nurses as a token of appreciation. Additionally, one of our own survivors shared healthy exercises that have helped him stay well. It was truly an inspiring and heartwarming experience. 💖 #CancerSupport #TeamMaimo #MaimonidesHealth #CancerSupportGroup #PatientCare #Inspiration #CommunitySupport

Survivorship and Supportive Care Leader | Patient Advocate | Nonprofit Board Volunteer | Lifestyle Medicine
Arif Kamal MD, MBA I appreciate that you shared this important message with everyone. I would go one step further and say that comprehensive supportive care should start at time of diagnosis. We have improved treatment for some metastatic cancer types so that individuals can live years on chronic treatment. Those patients are interested in survivorship topics such as lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, sleep optimization), integrative interventions, cognitive care and psychosocial support that can be important in a longer cancer journey. I know that NCI Office of Cancer Survivorship has encouraged research into models where survivorship is provided for patients living with cancer or metastatic disease. I'm hoping that survivorship and palliative care can come together to collaborate on developing models of care for the diverse population of metastatic survivors. #Survivorship #Palliative
Sitting in the plenary hall of #ASCO24, I was reminded of a 32-year old woman with advanced breast cancer I cared for in palliative care clinic a few years ago. Our treatments had failed her, and recognizing we were in a different place, asked the question I often ask my patients - “When you think about the future, what do you hope for the most?” Having been taught by some of the best in healthcare communications - Anthony Back, James Tulsky, Keith Swetz, MD MA FAAHPM HMDC, Toby Campbell MD, MS, FAAHPM, Elise Carey, Vicki Jackson, this question is an effective method to get past overlying issues down to underlying motivations and emotions. My patient knew she was dying. And thus holding two truths at the same time - hopefulness for peace for herself and her family, and anticipatory grief of leaving her physical body, was needed but nonetheless difficult. Oftentimes, the time and skills to address these situations with compassion and finesse takes the integration of a palliative care specialist. Which, for the first time I’ve seen at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), was the theme of the Presidential address in front of 44,000+ attendees. I agree wholeheartedly with Dr Schuchter: We in oncology should serve to cure often, and comfort, always.

Kathleen Aller's personal story reminds us of the importance of improving healthcare access and outcomes. 🏥 Read her insightful blog on the challenges we're addressing in the industry. 📖👇 #healthcareit #data #blogpost #healthcareinnovation
We all have stories about what motivates us. For those of us in healthcare, it is often the experiences of friends and family from our own lives that supply the “why.” One of Kathleen Aller's motivators is the young family friend “Evan” who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer during the summer between his first and second years of college. Fortunately for Evan, he was able to connect with, and have his care managed by, one of the world’s experts on his condition. But Evan wanted to receive care close to his home, and his care manager practiced hundreds of miles away. Evan’s story turned out well – 10 years on, he is cancer free. But Kathleen continues to keep his story fresh in her mind, because it highlights several of the challenges we are still addressing as an industry.
