Are we focused on the right goals, and more importantly, the same goals? This was the topic of my very important team meeting with my intern today. She wants more focus on snacks and snuggles. I want more focus on business development and pipeline. We agreed that more revenue would lead to more discretionary spending on dog toys. So she has promised not to bark during my client calls. The intern who fetches your coffee might be your company’s secret weapon. Raise your hand if you feel personally victimized by the RELENTLESS onslaught of advertising in every crevice of your life. 🙋♀️😩 It’s like we can’t even breathe without being slapped in the face with a “BUY NOW!” message. Open your phone? Ad. Turn on the TV? Ad. Listening to your fave true crime podcast? You guessed it...AD. 🙄 And don’t even get me started on the sneaky “product placement” tactic. I’ll never forget my college internship with Levi’s, scouring magazines for the chance to subtly slide our jeans into a “Top 5 Summer Must-Haves” list. (Spoiler alert: those rankings are about as legit as a 3 dollar bill 😂) As a consumer, this constant barrage of “BUY ME! PICK ME!” is straight up EXHAUSTING. It’s like we can’t even have a moment of peace without someone trying to sell us something. And as a business owner, it can be tempting to join the noise just to be heard. But is that really how we wanna roll? Do we want to be just another voice in the sea of sameness, or do we want to stand out by putting our audience FIRST? Focus on serving our people in a way that feels GOOD. Less “look at me!” and more “I see you.” Less scrolling and more connecting.

Conflict can be neutralized by choosing facts over opinions and feelings/beliefs even when it feels uncomfortable or unpopular. This helps one to understand what happened instead of allowing our brains and other people to fill in the gaps which may lean heavily in the feelings and opinions zone. Our human cognition and social interaction allows misinformation to impact our decisions even when new information is acquired. This can lead to several biases and poor decisions that can negatively impact your organization. This reasoning is tied more to one's personal or moral value than objective evidence. 👉🏾How do we correct this? Leon Festinger's theory talks about the inconsistency in our beliefs and behaviors that make us uncomfortable. Consequently, our brains go into protect mode to help us deal with the internal conflict, the discomfort of the conflict, and ways we will solve it. What does it look like in the classroom or workplace? 👉🏾 I see a student cheating on a test, know it is wrong, hesitate to respond cause it goes against my state scores 👉🏾 I know my new hire is grossly underpaid, my budget has the money, the candidate is eligible and qualified for the full salary but I want to hold it just in case they leave in a few months or tries to complain. I can use it then. 👉🏾 They just fired Joe, our only male employee because he was not a fit per our manager. I say nothing because I am not a supervisor but he was really good at his job. He had to do something to get fired! He must not be a good person like I thought. These are examples of what organizations and individuals within those walls witness weekly. In 1999 as an associate brand manager intern, I learned how to breakdown a brand strategy in 90 minutes or less because I was mentored by two of the best in the business. (Shout out to Archie Mack - Oreo Brand Wizard) I interviewed with Frito-Lay's Sun Chips brand team and was able to explain what was happening in the healthy chip category and how I would increase sales and penetration even down to the flavor categories. Although my scores were high and I had more knowledge and experience than the other interns, she said "no, not her" and referred to me as the Nabisco candidate. My Frito-Lay mentors later said I did extremely well per the evaluations, it came down to her not liking my answers and confidence because she built the portfolio. As a result, I didn't get enough collective votes to secure the offer. 💎Lesson: Cognitive dissonance can have you missing out on candidates and experiences that can change both #impact and influence. Choose to make informed decisions based on facts and evidence, not opinions, values, and feelings. My 9-year old daughter sat with us yesterday eating mac and cheese at a restaurant lunch table with our mid-Atlantic subsidiary president Sal Fiorentino and other senior leaders, including Alexis Herr, P.E. Richard Storbeck, P.E. Michael Sladki, and an interviewee whom we were #interviewing for a senior level position with ECS Limited. This happened because: + my wife had to go out of town for her company training, + I had this interview scheduled weeks in advance, and + it is summer vacation for my daughter, and I cannot leave her alone (duh). After exploring my babysitting options, I decided to make it a “bring your kid to work day” and took her with me on a road trip to our head office in Chantilly, VA. My colleague Alexis Herr, P.E. brought a bracelet-making kit from her home and some other toys so my daughter could keep herself entertained while we interviewed the candidate. She even got a tour our our #concrete and #soils #laboratory😀She was unchanged in her career choice after the tour and stuck with wanting to either become an artist or chemist. We will see 😉 I am grateful to work for a company and with colleagues where there is a #workculture that is rooted in the belief of staff as #workfamily, and an understanding that employees work hard to balance their personal and professional lives.
