#StoriesToRemember | "This work is published for the new century and will last as long as this one."
André Michelin.
In the 1880s, brothers André and Edouard Michelin founded the tire company that bears their name. They started producing the detachable bicycle tire, their flagship product in those years.
It should be remembered that at that time, there were barely 3,000 cars on the roads in France. In general, the presence of cars in Europe was minimal. Even Gottlieb Daimler was still developing the model of the modern truck. The roads were in deplorable condition, there were hardly any road signs, and driving was little short of an adventure.
However, these brothers from Clermont-Ferrand saw the impact the automotive industry would have on society. To encourage its development, in August 1900, they launched a small guide to encourage motorists to take their first road trips.
The #MichelinGuide began as a red-covered handbook that included maps, places to refuel, repair shops, instructions for changing tires, and places to sleep and eat.
Unbeknownst to them, Michelin's innovative vision would play a crucial role in shaping the culture of road travel. The idea behind this guide was to promote the use of automobiles and consequently increase the demand for tires. But it also benefited the development of the car industry and road infrastructure.
As we all know, the guide aroused so much interest in the restaurant section that they started to include its recognized stars as a restaurant rating system. Another innovation that revolutionized the restaurant and gastronomy industry.
The origin of the Michelin Guide - a work published in the 20th century and now more famous than ever - is undoubtedly a #StoryToRemember.
