Live in your habits. Don’t just vacation there. Vacationing somewhere typically refers to visiting a place for a temporary period, often for leisure or relaxation. During a vacation, you change from your usual routines and do things such as sightseeing, trying new foods, or participating in recreational activities. Conversely, living somewhere involves integrating into the local community, establishing routines, and making the location your primary base for daily activities. Our resolutions from the beginning of the year are often planned like a vacation and we don’t get ourselves involved with the "community" who have the same goals and are establishing those daily habits that can hold us accountable or make sure those resolutions can be sustained as part of our long-term daily lives. If you’ve already lost on what your resolution was it’s still early in the year and you can easily adjust and get back on track even if you are still sticking to your resolution make sure you get involved in your “community” and continue making those habits part of your daily lives to hit those long-term goals. #motivationmonday

Today, I want to share a personal reflection on navigating disappointment as a busy working mom when it comes to summer vacation plans. This year, like many of you, I had grand dreams of a summer getaway with my family — a chance to unwind, explore, and connect. However, as life would have it, our family won't be embarking on a traditional vacation this year. And yes, it stings. But here's the twist: Instead of dwelling on the disappointment, we're embracing a new adventure. This summer, we're opting for two one-on-one trips — personal experiences where we can connect individually and create special memories that will last a lifetime. I will be heading to the Bahamas with my daughter to celebrate her high school graduation. I have a few days to spend with her before she launches into college-she leaves early, moving out in June! John will wait until the end of summer and head out on a very special trip with our oldest son to witness the Olympic sailing events in the south of France. Yes, I’m green with envy. While it's not the family vacation we initially envisioned, these one-on-one trips offer a unique opportunity for deeper connections and meaningful experiences. It's a reminder that sometimes, life's detours lead to unexpected blessings. So here's to embracing life's twists and turns, finding joy in the journey, and cherishing the moments — whether they unfold according to plan or take us on an entirely new path. 5 Things I learned while on vacation this summer.... 1. Packing your essential tools (literally or figuratively) helps smooth life transitions. Identify your essential tools and bring them with you. No matter how great the vacation rental is, I should always bring my favorite parmesan grater-lemon zester! For you, maybe it's a Swiss Army knife, meditation practice, or 20-minute solo walk around the block. 2. Plans are great, but staying open to unexpected delights is even better. One day, we thought we were headed to a museum, but instead, we switched plans and played along flat rocks while people bobbed down the river on giant tubes. It was one of the best moments of our trip. Let life take you by surprise - it's usually better than whatever you drummed up! 3. Coffee out is more expensive than making it home, but sometimes it pays off. We went to the same café each day. We made friends with the locals. When we needed a babysitter in a pinch, they were ready to step up and help us find someone! 4. Climbing to the highest point doesn't just work your muscles, it gives you time to ponder the important stuff. We drove (and then hiked) to the highest mountain top around. Seeing things from way up high gave me better perspective on my earthly goals. Dust off your shoes and get out there! 5. Know when it's time to come home. Truth be told, we stayed away a little too long. I forgot how good simple home pleasures can be. The best day of our vacation was when we were finally home and spent an afternoon reading while our daughter played in the Dutch sun. #summer #lifelessons #simpleliving #vacation

Many people see us hiking around on challenging trails and wonder why we do that. The short answer is that we love to relax and unwind on vacation, and we do that best in the mountains- hiking and exploring. Spending time outdoors is a full sensory experience that anchors us in the present moment and helps us to feel connected, grounded, and a part of something much bigger than ourselves. We get the benefits of sunlight, honoring our circadian rhythm and stimulating serotonin secretion. In addition to that, we move and interact with a natural environment and are not bombarded with stimulation, which can lower our cortisol levels. We all know that taking a vacation is good for you! It’s less clear that we really understand exactly how good it is for you, given that more than half of Americans give up paid time off every year. According to the U.S. Travel Association, this amounted to 768 million days of unused vacation time, with more than 30% of it forfeited completely. Additionally, over 50% of managers feel burned out; taking a vacation (and actually unplugging) has never been more important. “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.
