There was the first notion, the Professor’s idea, a two-toned sphere all snuggled up in a one-capsule-thick blanket – a fancy way of sayin' a bichromal sphere first sole-ly encapsulated and thereafter coated down monolayer-ly in a cooperatin' aqueous binder, for you science buffs. This was Nick Sheridan's Xerox PARC brainchild pioneered with elastomeric swellin', mind you, but we aimed to make it a mite more practical with our little microcapsule concept. Then there was Idea B, a right electrifying proposition! Modesty aside, that there was my own contribution.. Tiny particles cavortin' in a vat of dye, or maybe even two different sets of differently pigmented rascals doin' their jig inside a teeny bubble. All this under the watchful eye of an electric field runnin' top to bottom, like a cattle prod for color! Now, Idea C was a sly dog altogether – dielectrophoretic, they called it. Instead of shovin' the particles from top to bottom, we'd give 'em a good side-to-side nudge from below with an alternatin' current. Three options, each one a contender in this here scientific horse race! Now, the bigwigs, bless their pointy-headed ways, steered me clear of the electrophoretic approach. "Focus on the sphere," they'd say, tappin' their pipes with a frown. But you see, curiosity's a powerful itch, and sometimes the best discoveries happen after dark, when the lab's all quiet and the only witness is the hum of the machinery.
