My predictions for Super Bowl 58 ads (so thrilling that you can actually say "Super Bowl" outside of ads): It's all about the sphere. And Taylor Swift. The sphere, not unlike Super Bowl ads themselves, is a rare occasion when Americans actually care about a media buy. I’m really looking forward to seeing what brands manage to get on the sphere, and what they actually put on it. I hope it’s very sphere-optimized. I think brands will also try to find legal ways to reference Taylor Swift being at the game. If not in the spots themselves, it’s definitely going to be part of their social plans. Beyond the Super Bowl, I think we will start to see more Super Bowl-like advertising throughout the year. People are ready for lighter, less self-serious spots. Before all the Super Bowl chaos happens tomorrow, if you had ANYTHING to do with a #SuperBowl campaign, or an activation around the Super Bowl, take a minute and give yourself some credit. There will be a lot of people who are going to give their opinions (the good, the bad, and the ugly) tomorrow but until then, just appreciate the fact you brought something to life out of nothing. There are HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of people involved in each one of these activations on the ground around the city and spots themselves. If you know someone who played a part in them tell them that it's really f-ing cool and they did a great job. If you were involved in them, give yourself some credit for being a reason why it came to life. Doesn't matter if you came up with the idea, were a grip on set, helped support the timeline, directed it, greenlit the idea, helped make the funding possible, did the social posts, created graphics, wrote the script, gave feedback to someone that showed you something, community managed, built the websites, or whatever. As marketers, we're faced with the daunting challenge of capturing attention, sparking emotion, and leaving a lasting impression—all within a mere 30 seconds or less. With the Super Bowl being one of the most-watched events globally, the stakes couldn't be higher. The pressure to deliver something memorable, shareable, and talked-about is immense. Now, some might question the rationale behind spending $7 million for a mere half-minute slot. But consider this: the Super Bowl isn't just a football game; it's a cultural phenomenon. It's a moment where brands have the undivided attention of millions of viewers—a captive audience of 150M primed for engagement. In that brief window, a well-crafted Super Bowl commercial has the potential to transcend mere advertising and become part of the cultural zeitgeist. This year’s Super Bowl ads were…not it First and foremost, I want to clear: Everyone who worked on a Super Bowl ad is a hero. You fought hard, worked counteless hours on these ads, and probably had to deal with so many setbacks and ideas being on the cutting room floor. Hats off to you 👏 However, I also want to be objective. Going into this year without spoiling previews, taking in reactions from friends and non-ad people, it felt like that there weren't that many ads that felt punchy. They were great, but they could have had more impact on the big day. My collective thoughts: 1. Way too many celebrities. WAY too many. 2. Celebrities were not used in anyway that was great. Only two that stood out to me was Audrey Plaza and Arnold with their delivery, and barely Ben Affleck 3. It was hard to recall which ad was for which brand overall. Insights were awesome individually, but I feel like overall there was some distinctivness missing. 4. You could tell brands were playing it safe. We were told it was going to happen too. A partner of St. Louis CITY SC asked a great question: If fans recall only one asset, which one is it? When fans correctly identify the corporate partner (aided recall) they are then asked to select the assets the partner used to communicate with them. If fans recall a partner, a little over half the time (51.8%) fans select one or two assets the partner used. On average, among those who recall the partner, fans select three out of the nine categories we track. Back to the question. If fans select only one asset, the top four most likely are: 1. IP (24%): Use the team's logo or marks in ads, stores, websites, social media and marketing campaigns; includes theme nights, promotions & giveaways.  2. In-Bowl (18%): Everything in view from seats or in-camera view. 3. Venue (18%): Everything fans see on the way to seating area. 4. TV/Streaming (12%): Commercials and messages before, during, and after broadcasts; including media backdrops. Consider these as essentials to reach the most fans in partnership activation.
