No it is not a jab of concentrated light BS that makes you less gullible. Pre-bunking gets you in a headspace to process information a bit less impulsively - to walk in prepared. The effects discussed here are limited but there are plenty of factors to consider - how involved we are in the message premise, our need for cognition in general, the perceived credibility of the messenger; there's a lot of noise (including our own) that obscures the true signal. Nonetheless the principles in general are sound and it doesn't take a lot. Intuition is not all evil, we just need to slow ourselves down from acting solely on intuition. Give yourself a few seconds to ask questions about counter-factuals, ask about base rates, ask for evidence, check the evidence, look beyond the messenger and into the message. Every little bit that you engage your reasonable mind will raise your 'immunity' to bad decisions and misinformation. #cognitivebiases #thinkingfastandslow #fakenews #cognition #decisionmaking #intuition https://lnkd.in/gaF6BnvX

We're all allowed to have differing opinions, but problems happen when those #opinions are based in untruths and #misinformation. We have access to so much information--maybe too much--so why do we love to sit in our ignorance? I think it's because everyone has a microphone to scream about whatever they think is right. But the thing is, opinions don't trump facts. When we are so beholden to our opinions and can't consider that you could be wrong and you don't want to discuss with anyone who doesn't believe like you, this is when groupthink happens. #Groupthink makes us feel like everyone who doesn't think like us has been duped. That anyone who has a differing opinion or perspective is attacking them personally. That folks who believe differently are evil or not deserving of humanity. It's a slippery slope. #factsoverfeelings #community

Seth Godin Speaks Informed consent (rarely is) Adults make choices and live with the consequences. No one else should tell us what flavor of ice cream we prefer, or what career to choose. We’re good at knowing what we want. In practice, this works really well for certain kinds of decisions. But when we add the network effect, profit-seeking industrial entities, statistics, long-term impact and side effects, it often falls apart. Few people with terminal lung cancer made a fully informed decision when they started smoking cigarettes decades ago. Millions of teens who got hooked on a Juul certainly didn’t. We’re tempted to take the “free” case of bottled water that the local market is offering, without considering what’s going to happen to those bottles when we’re done with them. And while it’s easy to overregulate the testing and distribution of pharmaceuticals, it’s even easier to underregulate them. There’s no right answer, there’s simply a spectrum. Ideally, we’d each be able to make smart, long-term decisions with accurate information. I consider myself pretty rational, but, like most people, I don’t do a longitudinal study before taking a pill or buying a new product. We use buzz, hype and status to make decisions without statistics or peer-review. Society might not know the ideal answer about where to draw the line between individual choice and community standards, but it’s worth asking the questions. Are people likely to be misled, confused or tricked into taking actions that hurt themselves and others? Are there incentives in place for consent to be skipped, or profits to be made when people are not fully informed? Are there bugs in our human decision-making processes that are likely to be hacked by organizations that have a different goal than we do? Are there public health implications that have more impact than the benefits to an individual? Like microeconomics, classic marketing theory happens in a vacuum, not the real world. To put it into widescale practice, we need to think hard about the impact of millions of decisions, often made without clarity or perspective.

How do we effectively communicate the critical role of immunizations in public health to a wider audience? We believe the key is to start young—educating the next generation is our answer to spreading the word about the vital role of immunizations in public health. In the face of declining immunization rates and the troubling resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, COMMUNITY IMMUNITY emerges as a timely narrative that connects with a critical public health issue. Athena's journey in the book serves not only as an educational tool but also as a mirror reflecting the challenges and consequences of vaccination hesitancy. It underscores the essential role of childhood immunization in safeguarding individual and community health. As public health professionals, policymakers, and educators, it's imperative we leverage such narratives to foster informed discussions and actions toward improving immunization coverage. COMMUNITY IMMUNITY reminds us of the power of education and advocacy in addressing vaccine hesitancy and ensuring a healthier future for all children. Join the dialogue. Embrace the mission to educate, advocate, and vaccinate. Together, we can turn the tide against the resurgence of preventable diseases. https://lnkd.in/gaieciMu #CommunityImmunity #ChildhoodImmunization #PublicHealthAwareness #VaccineAdvocacy #HealthPolicy #CommunityHealth

What interventions work best when trying to change people’s behaviour? 'Largest Quantitative Synthesis to Date Reveals that knowledge (like educating people about the pros of vaccination), general attitudes (like implicit bias training), and general skills (like programs designed to encourage people to stop smoking) have negligible effects on behaviour. Effective at an individual level is targeting #habits (helping people to stop or start a behaviour), behavioural attitudes (having people associate certain behaviours as being “good” or “bad”), and behaviouural skills (having people learn how to remove obstacles to their behavior).'

1moVery interesting take on skepticism Madhur Chadha ! Skepticism can be a powerful tool for critical thinking and thorough evaluation of ideas. This mindset can help in identifying potential flaws and risks. However, it is similar to a two edge sword leading to unintended consequences such as delayed decision-making, preference to specific kind of inputs irrespective of their importance, and a lack of trust within the team. Balancing skepticism with open-mindedness and collaboration can be crucial to make progress in such situations.
