It’s Mental Health Awareness Week – a week about embracing and joining open conversations about our mental health. According to a recent report from the United Nations, nearly one billion people worldwide now suffer from mental health disorders, an eye-opening statistic that continues to grow. At MAC Clinical Research, we have extensive experience in exploring the therapeutic potential of psychedelics like psilocybin, MDMA, DMT, and LSD in treating a variety of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, opioid, and alcohol addiction. Not to take anything away from the great work Patrick J. Kennedy does to help people, like himself, with co-occurring mental illness and addiction, but stigma is not the main reason half of people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder do not seek treatment. Lack of insight, known as Anosognosia, should not be ignored when advocating for removing barriers to treatment and care. As DJ Jaffe used to say, someone who knows they're Jesus, is eating out of a dumpster and is disheveled with poor hygiene, does not care about what his friends think about him. He will not go to treatment because he knows he's Jesus. In his disconnected thinking, you are the one who needs his help. Offering panacea solutions only serves to divide further. Hey everyone, as we kick off Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to touch on a topic that should be on every company’s radar: the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). This law requires health plans to provide equal coverage for mental health and substance use disorders as they do for physical health conditions. When it comes to mental health parity compliance, one of the biggest challenges is making sure your plan covers key treatments. The DOL has specifically called out a few areas that plans often stumble on: -Applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for autism spectrum disorder -Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder -Nutritional counseling for eating disorders If your plan is excluding these treatments altogether, that's a big red flag. These services should be covered just like any other medically necessary treatment. So, brokers and company leaders, now's the time to take a closer look at your plan's coverage. By making sure you're not inadvertently excluding these critical treatments, you're not only staying compliant, but you're also providing your employees with the support they need.
