Dear Network, I am looking for your help to raise funds for Endometriosis UK, a charity that means a lot to my daughter and therefore me.
1 in 10 women suffer from suffer from Endometriosis, a condition as common as asthma and diabetes. Why am I discussing this and raising funds for Endometriosis UK, because one of those 1 in 10 is my daughter, Caitlin.
She has shared (her words) more than half of her life with this condition and its debilitating symptoms. She waited 7 years for an official diagnosis and, like many others, had various different "treatments" until then. It has affected her life as a professional working woman due to the lack of awareness and education on the condition. Unfortunately there is no way to prevent endometriosis and there is currently no cure
To support Caitlin, and increase awareness of a condition that affects so many, I have decided to complete the 100 mile cycle route of the 2023 Ride the North and raise funds for Endometriosis UK.
About the Event
RtN is a supported ride through welcoming villages on the beautiful backroads of North East Scotland. This year the event starts in Huntly, Aberdeenshire on Saturday 26 August, with two routes, 100 miles and 64 miles, both routes contain climbs including Suie Hill and Cabrach.
More information can be found here - Home - Ride the North (ride-the-north.co.uk).
I know how the increased cost of living is impacting everyone and if you can’t donate, I’d be grateful if you could share this post, to raise awareness. Thank you.
About the condition
Endometriosis is a progressive, chronic condition that can start at puberty and continue through to old age, it has many different symptoms which can be debilitating at all levels.
Normally before a period, the endometrium thickens to receive a fertilised egg in response to a release of the hormone oestrogen. When pregnancy does not happen, the lining breaks down and leaves the body as menstrual blood (a period).
Endometriosis tissue can grow anywhere else in the abdomen and somtimes in the chest as well as inside of a uterus. This tissue will go through the same process of thickening and shedding, but it has no way of leaving the body and is trapped. This leads to pain, swelling and sometimes damage to the fallopian tubes or ovaries, causing fertility problems. Other symptoms include chronic pelvic/back/leg pain during and in between periods, adhesions and scar tissue, bloating, heavy bleeding, mind fog, chronic fatigue, depression and many more.
