We require an urban management system and lifestyle that coexists with resources (waste). How to extend the life cycle or redefine functions of waste. Through cross-industry supply chain integration, we can attain goals such as carbon reduction, plastic reduction, waste reduction, and resource utilization. #zerowaste #undp #urbandevelopment #carbonreduction #reduceplastic
♻️ Only 9% of all the plastic waste generated globally is recycled. 🌿 79% ends up in landfills or in nature. 🔥 12% is incinerated. Why aren’t we recycling more plastic? Find out here https://go.undp.org/7iEZ

We're passionate about giving plastic a second life. We do this by remanufacturing recycled plastic bottles into high-value raw materials, breathing new life into what was once considered waste. This process not only reduces our environmental impact, but also allows us to create meaningful new products. By repurposing these materials, we're: 👉 Reducing reliance on virgin plastic: This lowers the demand for new oil extraction and production. 👉 Minimizing landfill waste: Diverting plastic waste from landfills helps conserve valuable space and resources. 👉 Promoting a circular economy: We keep materials in circulation, reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability. Our commitment to responsible manufacturing extends beyond recycling. We strive to use sustainable practices throughout our entire process, minimizing our environmental footprint and ensuring a brighter future for generations to come. 📦 Natpak - The creative solution for sustainable packaging #natpak #recycledplastic #remanufacturing #sustainability #circulargconomy #gogreen #rABS #rPP #rPS #rPE

The International Plastic Bag Free Day aims to discourage the use of plastic bags for ‘use-and-throw’ purposes be it for food packaging or buying groceries. First celebrated in 2009 by an environmentalist collective Zero Waste Europe, institutions like schools, universities, and civil society groups organise awareness campaigns and clean-up drives to mark this day. Plastics can take up to 500 years to disintegrate, so they can accumulate in soil and water, causing harm to ecosystems, marine life, clog drainage systems, disrupt recycling processes, and contaminate waterways. Use recyclable bottles, avoid buying products in single use plastics and plastic bags.

The plastic recycling issue is a systematic problem. The existing recycling system and industry define recycling as a substitute source for new raw materials. Plastic recycling can also lead to a decline in raw material quality due to the current recycling methods being based on usage frequency. Most industries can only use once-recycled single-material plastics. This means that most composite multilayer film plastics cannot be reused. The Bantul Resilience Green City project we are launching will redefine waste collection and sorting systems. Integrating the industry chain includes waste to energy, repurposing plastic into green lumber, and converting organic waste into a sustainable food supply chain. Establishing a circular economy supply chain system to upgrade and manage urban waste effectively. #urbandevelopment #resilience #wastemanagement #circulareconomy #greensupplychain #undp

Starting with the user's own appropriate waste sorting and disposal, the recycling process should begin. If not, the recycling process would be inefficient due to the extremely high cost of separating plastic in bulk from mixed garbage/ waste.

How do we reduce our plastic footprints? 👣 While recycling is important, the most effective thing you can do is avoid using plastics in the first place. During last week's National Recycling Week, we asked Dr Deborah Lau, who leads our Ending Plastic Waste mission, to explain why this is so important. We’re on a mission to reduce the amount of plastic waste entering the Australian environment by 80 per cent by 2030. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gyWcciB7

Addressing the Plastic Recycling Conundrum A recent report by the United Nations Development Programme highlights a crucial global issue: despite technological advancements, a staggering 79% of our plastic waste still ends up in landfills or polluting nature. ▪ Why is this happening? Here's a quick rundown of the key challenges: ▫ Contamination: Mixed materials in our recycling bins lead to lower quality recycled products and complicate the sorting process. ▫ Harmful Chemicals: Many plastics contain additives that are hazardous to human health, posing risks during the recycling process. ▫ Economic Viability: The diverse types of plastics require costly and complex sorting, making recycling less profitable. ▫ Limited Lifespan: Plastics can only be recycled a few times before they degrade in quality. ▫ Misunderstood Symbols: Those recycling numbers on plastics? They're not always a green light for recyclability. But there's hope. The UNDP suggests actionable steps, such as reducing inessential plastic use, advocating for transparent and responsible policies, and supporting zero-waste initiatives. ▪ African Context ▫ Growth in Recycling Market: Africa’s plastic recycling market is expected to grow from 9.95 million tonnes in 2020 to 15.36 million tonnes by 2030, showing a significant increase in recycling. ▫ Innovative Projects: 15 projects across sub-Saharan Africa are in the running to tackle plastic pollution, showcasing regional innovation and commitment. ▫ Recycling Rates: Only 12% of the 17 million tonnes of plastic pollution generated in sub-Saharan Africa is recycled annually. Investment opportunities therefore abound. ▫ Success Stories: South Africa, for instance, has achieved a 67% recycling rate of all PET bottles, a remarkable feat compared to the global average. As professionals and conscious consumers, we can drive change. By understanding these challenges and advocating for sustainable practices and policies, we can make a difference in the fight against plastic pollution. #Sustainability #PlasticRecycling #EnvironmentalAwareness #UNDP #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy
