📣 WE ARE #hiring! #Dementia, including #Alzheimer’s, Lewy body #Parkinson’s, and others, is a growing health concern worldwide. These conditions are often associated with the formation and aggregation of neurotoxic misfolded oligomers such as amyloid-β, tau proteins, and α-synucleins. Understanding these harmful oligomers is essential to uncovering the molecular basis of these diseases. To investigate the protein aggregation dynamics and liquid-liquid phase separations, this project will use advanced #TEM imaging in the Liquid Phase. The research focuses on proteins associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, using a combination of simulations and liquid TEM imaging. Additionally, the project explores the impact of drugs and aggregation inhibitors on protein structures in liquid environments. This interdisciplinary approach combines imaging science, physics, molecular engineering, and computational science and holds great promise for helping to create innovative treatments for neurodegenerative diseases causing dementia. We welcome individuals willing to combine experimental imaging with computational efforts. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the Molecular Bionics group, a dynamic multidisciplinary team comprising chemists, physicists, mathematicians, engineers, and biologists. This #fellowship is associated with the research project #GeneracióndeConocimiento, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. Deadline: 15/10/2023. Join the #IBEC community! 👇 For more information, send your application here: https://lnkd.in/d-CYhb2q

Scientist Spotlight! Here is a little bit about our scientist Linda Forero, PhD ! What’s your background? I am a biophysicist, I got my bachelor's in physics, and then I did my postgraduate studies in Biology and Biochemistry. I received my PhD in Natural Sciences with focus on Neurosciences from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany in 2016. Then, I came to the US to train as a postdoc. I have vast experience in fluorescence microscopy (Confocal and Super resolution) and have worked with a variety of cells including adherent cell lines, stem cells, and tissue, and dissecting their intracellular signaling processes from extracellular activation to gene and protein expression. Now, at Mosaic, I am applying my skill set to develop cell assays to understand/dissect signaling pathways within drug discovery. What makes you passionate about your work? I am passionate about learning new things, and seeing through an experiment/project, I enjoy all the process not only the final result, but also the assembling of all pieces. I do also love working with people with different visions than mine. What do you think is the most exciting thing about being a scientist? When you discover something new, or when you can solve a problem that you have tried to resolve for some time. #scientistspotlight #biotechnology #proteintherapeutics #antibodydiscovery #drugdiscovery

In order to better observe and study the structure and activities of cells, scientists invented "#cellstaining". Cell staining is a technique that uses dyes or #fluorescent substances to label cells or specific structures within cells. Staining allows cells or organelles to be displayed more clearly under a microscope and allows cells of different types or functions to be distinguished. Staining can also help scientists detect cell growth, division, movement, signaling and other processes. There are many different cell staining methods, which can be divided into "#conventionalstaining", "#specialstaining", "#fluorescentstaining", etc. according to the properties and mode of action of the dye or fluorescent substance. Conventional staining uses one or more basic dyes to color cells or organelles, such as hematoxylin-eosin staining. Special staining uses specific chemicals to color cells or organelles, such as "silver staining". Fluorescent staining uses some substances that can emit visible light under the excitation of ultraviolet light or laser to color cells or organelles, such as "fluorescein isothiocyanate (#FITC)". When the cells are dyed with color and glow, it is truly unparalleled beauty! We can appreciate the diversity and complexity of cells and feel their vitality and dynamics. By dyeing cells with color, we can not only increase our knowledge and understanding of cells, but also increase our awe and praise for life.
