Update on the launch of the Hunger and Homeless Coalition of Collier County and Lee County Homeless Coalition, Inc. Getting Ahead program. Thank you so much to everyone that kindly reached out to offer space or suggestions! Locations and meals have been secured for the two groups in Naples and Ft Myers. We are so excited that we are now accepting participant applications for both groups! What we are still asking for your help with is providing the participants with generic gift cards to help support them while they are taking the steps to building self-sufficiency. "Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By World" is a 16 session workshop series providing tools and support to individuals motivated to get out of poverty. Working in a group-learning environment, participants will investigate their experience of poverty, as well as the impact within the community, providing critical information to take action to end poverty. Participants will also learn that money is only one of 11 resources used to define poverty. Learn how these resources affect their life and the lives of family. By examining the resources they have versus the resources they need, they will be able to formulate a personal plan, based on goals, to get out of poverty.

Day One of the Junior League Little Black Dress Initiative for poverty awareness.🏴 Here are some of the hard truths for Montgomery County: ✖️ 75,000 residents are considered food insecure. ✖️ 55,000 of those people live below the poverty line. ($30,000 for a family of four.) ✖️The largest demographic of the food insecure are women and children. *For those in my LinkedIn network who aren’t from this area. Montgomery County is the county above Houston (Harris County).* Choosing what to wear to work and what items we’d like to eat for breakfast is a luxury we take for granted. ‼️ For the next week, I will be wearing the same black dress to put myself into the shoes of those who don’t have the option to wear something different every day. Last year, the Junior League of The Woodlands raised $66,000 of funds to be exclusively used in poverty programs surrounding Montgomery County.💪 This year we are looking to raise more. One group that is doing an amazing job of addressing this form of poverty is the Indigo Hope Foundation. I believe the same could be said about poverty, don't you think? What if the above quote read: The only thing necessary for the triumph of poverty is for good men to do nothing. True. No? Poverty in America exist because good men and women, who have the power and capacity to do something about it allow it to exist, and then the rest of us who have the capacity to hold people in power accountable, do nothing. There needs to be a change of heart, mind, and soul in our country with a bit of a priorities adjustment. Think about it for a minute. We can find all the resources, support, and billions of dollars to put a man on the moon...create the Web Telescope...and an Atom Smasher. Yet, we can't come up with the resources, support, and billions to end poverty in America? Please! 37.9 million people live in poverty in America today, of which 11 million are helpless children, and 1.5 million are our nation's heroes, our veterans. To put these 37.9 million people into better perspective, there's more people living in poverty in the US today than the total population of the TOP 25 MOST POPULATED CITIES IN THE UNITED STATES! That's more than the total populations combined of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, Austin, Jacksonville, San Jose, Fort Worth, Columbus, Charlotte, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Oklahoma City, Nashville, El Paso, Washington DC, Las Vegas, and Boston...and the numbers in poverty are growing each year, not getting better! Imagine, visiting each one of these cities, and everyone living in these cities, lives in poverty. Poverty triumphs in America because we allow it to triumph. This week, we are acknowledging Anti-Poverty Week. Currently, 11 million US children are living in poverty. These children don't have all the tools to reach their full potential. Kids living in scarcity have different struggles and needs than other children. Many people want to support but may not know where to start. One of the simplest ways is by donating to an organization that serves children in poverty, going to schools and paying overdue lunch fees, offering to tutor children, or donating clothes or books. If a child comes into your life who may be living in poverty, being a role model to them can be extremely encouraging. Take this time to reflect on how you can make an impact on children living in poverty. Case in point. According to Ramseysolutions.com almost 24.5 million millionaires live in the United States. If each one of those 24.5 million millionaires donated just $100.00 per month, per year, that'd be $29.4 billion dollars raised annually, and poverty in America as we know it would become a thing of the past. My intent is not to pick on our nation's millionaires here because most have worked hard for their money, and their creative entrepreneurial spirit is one of the main reasons the United States is one of the greatest nations in the world. But according to Warren Buffet, "you owe it to the rest of humanity to think about the other 99 percent,", , , I would add, especially the 37.9 million Americans living in poverty, of which 11 million are helpless children, and 1.5 million are our nation's heroes, our veterans. If I may be so bold, to humbly request that our nation's 24.5 million millionaires embrace the power that is collectively in your hands.
