Transforming Team Culture Please don't mistake this for another appreciation post about Team Europe winning the Ryder Cup 🏆 last Sunday, albeit an amazing performance. Actually, there are many learnings that businesses can take from the Team Europe win. But what made this win so impressive? Ex-golfer and Team Captain, Luke Donald, gave a moving interview after this year’s underdogs were crowned the victors that also gave some amazing nuggets about leadership and culture. see below: 🤲It's not just about the sheer talent of our players, but the transformation of Team Europe's culture that deserves recognition. Team Europe completely transformed from a record defeat in 2021 against Team USA. 🌍 Team Europe's Ryder Cup journey has been about unity and camaraderie among players from 9 different countries, who regularly see each other as opponent. Leadership needed to create and environment & culture that drove pride, high performance, trust and embraced diversity 🏌️♂️ 1st and foremost, the culture within Team Europe was palpably different. Luke had set a clear vision, cultural ambition and strategy and then spent time sense-making & engaging everyone (Players, Staff & Families) around the Why, What and How. "We are united by a culture, and we are united by a generation of players that have come before us," said Justin Rose 🤗 Ego's were left at home. There was an unwavering belief that no matter where you're from, when you put on that blue and gold jersey, you're part of something bigger. It was a culture of trust, respect and a shared commitment to success of their vision. "We're caretakers of this European jersey right now, and we're hopefully going to pass it on in the future in a better spot than where we found it." Rory Mcilroy. The passion of the Europeans was clear, whereas, the headlines from the USA camp was of divide, with one player publicly stating he should be paid to wear the jersey. 🔄 They transformed the way they did things. Doing the same things but expecting different results wasn't going to fly. They harnessed the power of data and used it to help them to build a benchmark to constantly improve and succeed 🏅 The leadership played a pivotal role in this transformation. Captains, coaches, and veterans fostered an environment that encouraged open communication, support, and an unrelenting desire to improve. It was a culture where rookies felt empowered and seasoned players felt rejuvenated. It didn't matter what your world ranking was you were all their together to achieve the vision. As Luke says, when the time came it was his job to get out of the way 🤝 Ultimately, it was this culture of unity that translated into remarkable performance on the golf course. Celebrating a wonderfully hard fought contest yesterday winning a silver medal in a much larger tournament, GB Grand Slam in Birmingham. A huge shout to Gurjit Gallon who was adding a totally awesome human dynamic to the whole event yesterday. Great energy you legend! That said, I do know that getting the thing is not the point, the point of everything is the journey and what we become on that epic journey of life, being focused on the things that we decide are the goals, and then relentlessly pushing to do more and be more every single day. I also know there are no ideal circumstances in life and that most things worth having will involve a certain degree of pain and suffering, coupled with increasingly difficult challenges, doing things we are uncomfortable doing, and just getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. Sunday hit me like a ton of bricks. Honestly, when the stakes were high, I crumbled. This past Sunday, my dad and I had a shot at making it to the club family doubles semi-final at Greetham Valley Golf Club. It's a competition we have always dreamt of winning but never quite achieved it. Strangely, I woke up a bundle of nerves - and let me tell you, nerves aren't really my thing. Ask anyone, I'm usually as laid back as they come. Yet, this day felt different. The pressure weighed on me. Could it be that my dad is turning 70 this year, and I started thinking about the limited opportunities we have left? In the end, I fell apart. My golf game was, frankly, some of the worst I've played in months. After scrambling back to all square on the 18th tee, we ended up losing on the final hole. I was overwhelmed by this sense of letting my dad down. "I'm so sorry," I admitted to him. "I didn't contribute much today, and now we're out." In his still-strong Northern Irish accent, he told me, "What're you on about? You came through for us today; my game wasn't great either." Here's the twist: both of us were heaping the pressure on ourselves to perform for the other. We forgot we were a team, meant to support one another, not trudge around in isolation, griping about our performance. Had we simply communicated and lifted each other up throughout the game, we may well have won and been through to the semi-finals. The moral of the story? You never truly grasp the weight someone's carrying, be it on the golf course or at work. So, talk. We've all witnessed the power of communication these past few years, yet I personally still struggle to open up and share. I'm willing to bet there are others like me.
