After more than a decade in the fashion Industry and almost a decade as an International Fashion Designer/Innovator, I have come to realise that almost all recruiters and or companies as a whole, are unaware of what a Professional fashion Designer is capable of. They have no idea that we are trained to take up more than 14 jobs in the field. Fashion Design stands alone, and IS ALSO ; Pattern making, tailoring, photography, styling, fashion critiquing,fashion consultancy,Fashion Buying, Fashion Technical designing,Fashion Illustration, Costume Designing....etc. They all fall under our belts. Some companies specifically ask for these, but when a professional fashion designer applies for the job, theY think we can't perform the job because are Fashion Designers. My question is, do YOU even have an idea of who and what a Professional Fashion Designer in trained to be? 🤕

Why a great portfolio takes more than your best work. Your best work is not always the right work. Last week I had the opportunity to speak with an emerging fashion designer that’s on the TRL Fashion Space waitlist. “How do I make my portfolio stand out?” “…I have filled it with my best work and submitted it to all of my applications but no brand is replying” Could this partly be the reason to seeing 500+ applicants in the first week for a Junior Designer role? Making it harder to stand out as an emerging fashion designer and finding a job. Resulting in applying for any designer role just to get a job. Looks like a cycle? Potentially ending up with you taking whatever you get. But what if as a designer you were more targeted? •Be crystal clear about what you specialise in → Pick a lane •Specify the kind of brands you want to work with → Be in the same lane You're likely to come out with a specif portfolio, showing specific work for the specific role. Something to think about. What would you add to the two things above?
