What can an electrician possibly have to say at a fire professionals symposium?!? If I’m honest, the same question initially crossed my mind. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much it is going to take all of us, ALL OF US, working together in order to solve the safety issues we are seeing around lithium-ion batteries. They are everywhere, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. In my panel discussion this afternoon, I hope to share as much valuable information from my perspective with these fire professionals, as I have learned from them these past two days.
In a solemn moment by myself this morning in front of the beautiful fallen firefighter memorial here at the Florida State Fire College in Ocala, I had a thought come over me. Of all the people involved in safety around these technologies, firefighters are the last line of defense in fixing the problem, likely when someone else didn’t do their job.
This morning, I am challenging manufacturers, legislators, researchers, designers, engineers, codes and standards organizations, code enforcers, electricians, maintenance workers, etc. to step up their game for their roles in #lithiumionbattery safety. The better we do our jobs, the less likely it is that firefighters will need to do theirs.
Together, lets make a pact to work to ensure that another firefighter does not fall due to a lithium-ion event. Who’s in?!?
