Exploring a historic Deutsche Bahn track with a modern twist! 🚆 It's being resurrected for a research project of autonomous transport. Thanks to the University of Kiel REAKTbahn project, Sascha Kaven (Hamburg University of Applied Sciences ) and I had the pleasure of meeting the brilliant team, including Sven Ratjens and Prof. Reinhard von Hanxleden. 🤝 Our journey began with real hand-driven carts (draisiner) and will in the future transition to driverless trains, showcasing the evolution of rail transportation. 🛤️🚀 One of the fascinating challenges we encountered was managing one-track with trains going in both directions, with specific points to pass each other. 🚧 The question arose: "Who has to wait, and who can go?" The answer, intriguingly, is "it depends" – dependent on priorities, environmental factors, and attributes. 🤔 This is where Attribute-Based Authentication (ABAC) plays a crucial role in ensuring a smooth flow. This function prevents any unwanted rudder actions such as hard rudders which may cause damage to the ship, load or passengers. Remote-controlled, coordinated driving in inland navigation? It sounds like something from the future, but that was precisely the aim of a recently successfully completed research project. We played a key role in this pioneering project and is looking forward to contributing the knowledge gained to the future of the industry. Remote-controlled, coordinated driving could set new standards - an exciting glimpse into the future of logistics. ✨ The focus was on the Ernst Kramer motor cargo ship, which was brought up to date with a large number of cameras and technical equipment in order to be remote-controlled. In numerous practice runs, ten experienced skippers steered the Ernst Kramer from specially equipped control stations at the DST - Entwicklungszentrum für Schiffstechnik und Transportsysteme e. V. and the Chair of Mechatronics, Lehrstuhl für Mechatronik der Universität Duisburg-Essen. They practiced mooring, casting off, locking, as well as driving routes and maneuvering. Through practice, they were able to overcome their initial skepticism about remote control and the new technology. 🚢 The ability to steer an inland waterway vessel from the office during the day and be with the family in the evening could make the profession more attractive and family-friendly. OneDock by microFleet® is the world’s first mechanical and digital technology platform to enable universal #micromobility tracking, docking, charging, and sharing. It will connect and integrate high quality public and private micromobility vehicles into transport networks and facilitate clean, affordable, fast multimodal trips.
