๐ฃ We are looking for an enthusiastic and open-minded PhD researcher for a fully-funded 4-year position on "Knowledge Representation & Responsible Design for Inclusive Employment Matching Algorithms" at University of Twente! ๐ฆ Keywords: knowledge representation & reasoning, empirical and participatory research with vulnerable and marginalized groups, ontology matching, inclusive employment, interdisciplinary research Deadline for application: July 5th, 2024 ๐ This position is part of the wonderful project "Don't Forget the Forgotten! Towards a Platform-Based Approach for Sustainable Employment of Workers with a Disability", lead by Jeroen Meijerink. This NWO (Dutch Research Council)-funded project addresses the challenge of limited sustainable employment opportunities for workers with disabilities (i.e., a healthy, productive, and meaningful career). By developing online platform cooperatives and algorithms for matching disabled workers and employers, you address this urgent challenge while contributing to broader societal issues such as labor market shortages, budget strains, and the energy transition. ๐ In this PhD project, co-supervised by Joschka Hรผllmann, Jeroen Meijerink and myself, you will develop knowledge representation and reasoning techniques for inclusive employment of workers with a disability. You will work with disabled people and their employers to develop computational models (ontologies) that meaningfully represent what is important to them in their work for the purpose of AI-supported matchmaking. A prototype implementation of the matching algorithm will be developed as a proof of concept that demonstrates how an inclusive algorithm fosters a better person-environment fit for workers with a disability and facilitates sustainable employment. Here's a quick update, though this time it's not the usual positive one: Over the past few weeks, I've been on a rollercoaster of professional experiences. After facing countless interviews while simultaneously managing the demands of my master's thesis I was lucky to get job offers from some big-name companies and Ph.D. programs. Eventually, I decided to go for a Ph.D. opportunity within a prestigious European fellowship at a renowned robotics lab under the supervision of a distinguished researcher. Everything seemed in order, and I was preparing to move to the lab site leaving my apartment, and starting to search for an apartment around the lab site. However, just a couple of days before the starting day, I was caught off guard when I received an email from the professor indicating that the fellowship funding had not been approved due to an unforeseen issue. This was a shock because, during our previous meeting, we had discussed this matter, and I was assured that it wouldn't pose any issues. The professor had emphasized the importance of my commitment not to back out, and I intended to honor that commitment. This situation has forced me to restart my job search from scratch and find a new apartment in Paris, which has not been an easy task. Despite the setback, I view this as a new challenge and an opportunity to explore fresh possibilities and connect with new people. So a message to all #recruiters, whether technical or not, when dealing with individuals, remember that they are human beings, not just numbers. A simple oversight like this can have a profound impact on someone's career. It's crucial to ensure that the promises made are rooted in trust and integrity, rather than just trying to secure a deal. See you in the next post with some positive updates, hopefully as usual!๐ #CareerJourney #JobSearch

Transforming careers for Ph.D.'s Engineers & Researchers Through My RRAPID Framework | | Founder Dynamic Professionals Hub | Scientist (Ex-GE) | Speaker @ IITs & corporates
Years ago, during my tenure as a scientist, we were in the process of hiring for a critical role in our team. We already had a pool of candidates ready from the group of interns and postdocs at work in the company. โก๏ธAmong the candidates was a postdoc with an exceptional grasp of technical concepts and profound insights into their field of expertise., However, they struggled to navigate disagreements constructively and often failed to offer feedback without belittling others' contributions. And every other manager was on the same page about this person's attitude which felt annoying. Not surprisingly, They preferred someone couple of shaded less in technical adeptness but richer in attitude for the role. You know why? Because even within the job, your projects changes, and you have to master newer areas of work, hence your ability to adapt and collaborate effectively is paramount. And what works here, is your attitude to learn on the go, build your expertise with the help of other experts. As Ph.Dโs I have come across many who have this attitude of projecting how much they know, at the cost of belittling others. Well then know, Confidence in one's craft is commendable, but dismissing others' perspectives outright is a sign of overconfidence. And most managers in great companies, are most of the time very good at recognising such candidates. So my question to you is, ๐Is It it your skills or attitude, thats failing you ? Any similar stories ? The comments are eagerly waiting for your insights. #phd #rimadey #careercoach #researchers
