CLIMATE CHANGE FACETS: GROUND WATER DEPLETION & SINKING LAND FIELDS The overusage of under ground water (aquifers) for various puposes is just one more human abuse/ overstreaching towards a Nature's balance evolved over thousands of years with total disregard to its sustainabilty. The careless usage of underground water has many objectives like large scale crop and animal farming, aquaculture, urban city duwellings (e.g., the mammutt México City that is running out of water) etc This long established seek for immediate gains without sensate consideration about the future is the result of what we are experiencing today with the multi-faceted life threatening #weather and #climatechange It seems that all is coming back to hunt us at the same time...and it is because various equilibrium limits have been compoundedly broken Certainly all can not be fixed, if at all, i.e., they are mostly irreversible as our society, with an ever growing population (demand for the same "benefits") built its existence on them, a sand castle being blown by the wind not much unlikely the ancient Kingdoms of Ur, Babylon, Egypt and others We are not better than them. The cycles of boom and burst are immutable Truth is painful and generates narrow-minded antagonism. It is evident that the Homo sapiens is not truly sapient at all Afterall, the main thing that we learn from history is that we do not actually learn anything from history The bill is now coming for us to pay. We'd better get used to them and fix whatever we still can

Did you know, that livestock make up 62% of the world’s mammal biomass; humans account for 34%; and wild mammals are just 4%? - Not sure what bothers me the most - that wild mammals only represent 4% or 62% is cattle? How did we get here? In the last 100,000 years, as the human population increased, wild mammal biomass has declined by 85% Why? Early on, this was driven by hunting. More recently its driven by agricultural land expansion and elimination of natural habitats. #climate #nature #biodiversity #ecosystems #agriculture #gbf #naturepositive #habitats #naturedata #environmentalscience

Did you know? Bees and other pollinators are declining in abundance in part due to excessive use of agricultural chemicals.Other factors include intensive farming practices, mono-cropping and higher temperatures associated with climate change. Bees are among the keystone species, critical for human survival.About two-thirds of the crop plants that feed the world rely on pollination by insects or other animals, including bees to produce healthy fruits and seeds for human consumption. Today is World Soil Day. Soil is amazing. It stores carbon, protects us from droughts and floods, and gives us healthy food to eat. But too often we think of it as dirt. We have taken soil for granted and now one-third of the world’s arable soil is degraded. And given that it can take a thousand years for just one centimetre of topsoil to form, we must act now to save our soil. Farmers play a crucial role in the fight to save our soil. As custodians of the land, they are heavily reliant on the soil for their livelihood and can see first-hand the impact their work has on the soil beneath their feet. Many farmers have chosen to farm using nature-friendly methods in an effort to protect soil for future generations. But did you know that farmers are also at the forefront of research on soil health? #agroecology #worldsoilday #regenerativeagriculture #netzero Check it out from Soil Association https://lnkd.in/dX3pu6Mv

The days may be still short (not to mention chilly in Scotland!), but we’ve got one eye on spring here at IGS. Both autumn and spring are perfect seasons for planting tree seedlings, but with vertical farming technology, you can create optimal growing conditions all year round! These Norway Spruce seedlings were grown at our Crop Research Centre in as part of ongoing trials with Forestry and Land Scotland. Results saw conifers growing to 75mm 33% quicker than traditional growing methods, getting seedlings primed for the outdoors while protecting them from disease and pests in the process 🕷️. Reforestation is crucial in our fight against climate change, and we’re proud to be a part of it 💪🏼. #VerticalFarming #Reforestation #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #TreeSeedlings #AgriTech

How effective is nature-based CO2 removal using the ocean? 🌊 UEA's Dr Phil Williamson has found limited understanding of basic ocean processes is a hinderance, with the on-going commercialisation of some approaches “premature and misguided”. These techniques include shellfish cultivation, seaweed farming, coastal blue carbon - using the restoration of seagrass, saltmarsh and mangrove forests - and increasing whale populations through ‘re-wilding’. Dr Williamson: "Proponents of these methods have an incomplete or incorrect grasp not only of how the ocean carbon cycle functions, but also the massive up-scaling needed to provide significant climatic benefits". I used to think industrial agriculture was the root of all environmental evil. But I defend it more than I ever thought I would. Most people criticizing industrial agriculture do so from the comfort a coffee shop behind their computers fantasizing about a utopian "Garden of Eden. "If only the farmers were smarter, cared more about the environment or didn't only care about money & profits" - they think. All the while the farmers are outside day after day, working from sun up to sun down to barely make a living growing and raising the food we all take for granted. Most of them I know care deeply about the land. Most of them I know grew up enjoying the beauties of nature. Most of them I know feel stuck, unable to take risks to change. Most of them I know are in massive debt to continue farming. Most of them I know are skeptical to take advice from people who only know "regenerative farming" theoretically. Most of them I know are the hardest working, trustworthy and integral people around. Yes, we may need to transform our food system away from industrial farming model. But much of the blame does not deserve to be placed on the farmer. #soilhealth #sustainableagriculture #farming #agriculture #organicfarming #regenerativeagriculture #farm #climatechange #climate #ecology
