We're proud to partner with Anderson County, SC firefighters in their fight to prevent esophageal cancer. This week, they offered their team precancer screenings with the EsoGuard test. With a 62% higher risk, early detection is crucial for these heroes. "Screening is like fire prevention," said Honea Path Fire Chief, Jimmy Smith, MD This screening isn’t limited to firefighters. Doctors advise that individuals with risk factors, including family history, should also consider getting screened. #EarlyDetection #HealthTech https://lnkd.in/gQj7mgCS

🎗 This November, as we observe Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the cause touches me personally. Last year, in November 2022, I lost my father to cancer. It was a profound reminder that behind every statistic, there’s a story, a family, and a community grappling with loss. In my role at UK Asbestos Training Association - UKATA, my commitment to raising awareness about lung cancer is not just professional—it’s deeply personal. This disease remains one of the most common and serious types of cancer, and it affects the lives of countless individuals and their loved ones. This month, let's channel our collective efforts into: Education: Understand the risks and symptoms of lung cancer. Knowledge can lead to earlier detection and better outcomes. Prevention: Advocate for and practice workplace safety, especially in industries with increased risks, such as construction and manufacturing. Compliance with health and safety regulations isn't optional—it’s a matter of life. Compassion: Offer a hand or a listening ear to those fighting lung cancer. As someone who has experienced the pain of loss, I know the value of support during such challenging times. Research: Encourage and contribute to ongoing research, which aims to improve treatments and survival rates. Every breakthrough brings us closer to a cure. Advocacy: Use your voice to advocate for stronger policies that protect our workers and support early detection and treatment for all lung cancer patients. In memory of my father and the many others who have been affected by this disease, let’s dedicate ourselves to making a difference. Whether it’s through education, prevention, or advocacy, we all have a role to play in the fight against lung cancer. At UKATA, we believe that our work in promoting asbestos safety is a crucial step in preventing respiratory diseases. This month, let's honour those we have lost by protecting those we work with every day💛 #LungCancerAwarenessMonth #InMemory #HealthAndSafety #AsbestosAwareness #UKATA #LungHealth

Benefits of Regular Health Checkups for Colon Cancer Prevention I recall reading when the entertainment world suffered the passing of a young and very talented “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman who tragically passed away on August 28, 2020, at the age of 43. He was becoming a rising star and will be deeply missed. He was diagnosed in 2016 and fought the deadly disease of colon cancer. Unfortunately, the illness progressed and took his life. Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a type of cancer that begins in the colon or rectum. It often starts as small, noncancerous growths called polyps, which can become cancerous over time if not removed. My life has been touched by this disease. My father was diagnosed in the late 1980s. Our family had very little information about this cancer. His condition was detected at an early stage. He received chemotherapy which he had a hard time understanding. He did get better, and the procedure didn't cause him too much discomfort. During this time, colon cancer screening and promotion screening were not widely available. The American Cancer Society had just recommended regular screening for individuals over the age of 50. My other situation is I had a great friend and co-worker who attended a party over a weekend. He didn’t feel good and went to the bathroom. As he used the facilities, he suffered severe rectal bleeding and passed out. He was admitted to the hospital where he received news he had late-stage colon cancer. Over the next few months, he and his family consulted with healthcare professionals and treatment plans. My friend and I discussed his situation, and I was amazed at how upbeat and courageous he was. His family constantly looked for new treatments and drugs to fight this evil disease. The last time I saw him, I noticed the fire and determination had left him as the disease ran its course. He lost his battle a few weeks later. Preventing colon cancer involves a combination of lifestyle choices and regular screenings. While no approach can guarantee complete prevention, following these strategies can significantly reduce your risk of developing colon cancer: They include a healthy diet, intake of high-fiber foods, Moderate alcohol, no tobacco, regular exercise, screening (colonoscopy), and family history and genetic counseling. Consult with your healthcare provider to create a plan that best suits your needs and circumstances. #life, #healthcare, #prevention

At the 2023 IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial, 63% of the names added to the wall were members who had died from occupational cancer. What is Cancer? Cancer is the general term for a group of more than 100 different diseases that can begin almost anywhere in the body; it starts when cells lose the ability to regulate their growth and grow out of control. These cancer cells can invade and spread to other tissues within the body. This makes it hard for your body to work the way it should. How is Cancer Related to Firefighting? A number of published scientific studies suggest a link between firefighting and the development of cancer. These studies are considered to be foundational for demonstrating that fire fighters are at a greater risk for cancer than the general population due to fire fighters routine exposure to carcinogenic smoke, soot and other products of combustion. These studies show evidence that fire fighters are at a higher risk for developing certain cancers. This means their risk of developing cancer is higher than those in the general population. For example, when data shows that fire fighters face a 1.53 times greater risk for Multiple Myeloma compared to those who aren’t fire fighters, this means for every 100 people who contract Multiple Myeloma, 153 fire fighters contract the disease. These studies all included multiple fire fighters from different departments, and some include multiple countries. As a whole, they examined both the mortality (risk of death) and incidence (risk of developing) cancer. In one year alone, 436,000 Americans die from a cardiac arrest. Globally, cardiac arrest claims more lives than colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, influenza, pneumonia, auto accidents, HIV, firearms, and house fires combined. According to American Heart Association. About 9 out of 10 people who have cardiac arrest outside the hospital die. CPR can help improve those odds. If performed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from an out of hospital cardiac arrest. Come and join us for free training and help make these statistics thing of the past. #cprtraining #cprsaveslives

Although there are many risk factors for melanoma that cannot be prevented (we will talk about those tomorrow), nearly 90% of skin related melanomas are due to frequent UV radiation exposure which is highly preventable. Check out some of the ways you can protect yourself from UV radiation according to the CDC: 1. Stay in the shade, especially during midday hours. 2. Wear clothes that cover your arms and legs. 3. Wear a wide brim hat to shade your face, head, ears, and neck. 4. Wear wraparound sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays. 5. Use sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) 15 or higher, for both UVA and UVB protection. 6. Avoid indoor tanning. Moral of the story? Make sure to wear your sun protection 😎 Remember to like our page on Facebook (https://lnkd.in/gFC-xAES) and follow us on Instagram (@melanomaclinic) for more tips and helpful resources for melanoma prevention, treatment, and management. Throat symptoms such as hoarseness, chronic throat clearing, feeling a lump sensation in the throat, post nasal drip, Nasal congestion, swallowing difficulty and sinus issues are all related to acidic and non-acidic reflux disease and the esophagus should be examined for pre-cancerous changes in this patient population as well.
