This year, #RareDiseaseDay falls on the rarest day of the year. Recognized on the last day of February since its creation in 2008, Rare Disease Day acts as the globally coordinated movement on rare diseases, working towards equity in social opportunity, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease. A rare disease is classified as one that affects fewer than one in 2,000 people. Collectively, however, there are over 7,000 known rare diseases that affect 300 million people worldwide. The New York Academy of Sciences is committed to creating space to advance global opportunities to support medical expertise, knowledge, and research in this field through a variety of symposiums, panel discussions, and webinars.
