CEO and Senior Clinical Lead Physiotherapist AAC Health Group Australia, Aged care advocate (Aged Care Reform Now, Aged Care Justice), allied health and disability advocate. Opinions are my own.
You can see why over 3000 have signed our senate petition to #saveoursuper from greedy aged care providers in just over 2 weeks just how bad the taskforce report recommendations will be for all of us if we don’t speak up just as aged care taskforce member Margaret Walsh has bravely done in this sticker below. Margaret Walsh, OAM, 78, is on the council of elders as well , and also am aged care advocate from Aged Care Reform Now . I don’t speak for Margaret but please read her words. She shares same concerns about the aged care task force recommendations I and many others do which is why I launched the petition which both Margaret and ACRN support. And Margaret would know she was on the aged care taskforce ! And her and older people’s human rights to quality care, and not being abused are clearly being ignored. Anne Connolly article below quotes Margaret and outlines why so many of us are angry and frustrated at a government and aged care minister Anika Wells that continues to deny reality. Billions more has led to less aged care than at the time of the royal commission and it’s only getting worse. “Speaking for the first time to the ABC, she says the consumer voice was "quashed", with the final report being released with changes that she didn't approve. She is concerned about how much extra people will be asked to contribute. Margaret also has a background in a leadership role in The Association of Independent Retirees so is well versed to know what she’s talking about in regards to superannuation and what older people need. And it’s NOT what the taskforce report said about older people being increasingly wealthy. Margaret said the vast majority of 85-year-olds have super balances of less than $50,000. "Many of us have scrimped and saved over the years, we haven't taken overseas trips," she said. "We don’t want a user-pays system creating two tiers and yet still not have an aged care system, where the minimum level of care is not certain and even basic services might need to be paid .” Please listen to Margaret , mine and many other advocate concerns. More money won’t mean more care, just bigger profits aged care providers. A #supertax is an #agedcaretax and an #inheritancetax. Please sign our petition and #saveoursuper https://lnkd.in/gkyb2K-R
Thank you Anne Connolly for yet another brilliant article which covers all of our concerns ! https://lnkd.in/gZnJzbtM
You might have missed them, but here are some of the big changes coming in aged care

Every life deserves to be cherished and cared for, yet neglect can cast a shadow on our golden years. At First In Caring, we defy the notion that people simply 'die of old age.' Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that every individual, especially our seniors, deserves compassionate care and support. Let's rewrite the narrative together, ensuring that every chapter is filled with love, dignity, and the exceptional care that defines First In Caring. 💙 #ndisprovider #ndissupport #ndisaustralia #ndisserviceprovider

Please read this well written and insightful piece about VAD. The principle and intent behind the plethora of processes is understandable, but the criteria is restrictive and does not address non-terminal illnesses impacting severely on quality of life, or terminally ill persons facing a long period of deterioration before they meet the criteria of causing death within 6 months or 12 months if they are diagnosed with a neurodegenerative condition. Quality of life is not highly weighted as a criterion, rather it is a medically driven model based on diagnosis and prognosis. Agency is not yet properly recognised, by the time someone living with Dementia reaches the 12 month prognosis stage they are not able to meet the initial criterion of being sound of mind to make the choice. How do Advance Health Directives feature? Training, support and care for the practitioners involved in the process also needs to be improved, emotional load and burn out is briefly mentioned as an area of focus. Our family has had first hand experience of when VAD is not an option, we were not able to enact VAD for Johann Taylor as the processes were not finalised, but we often spoke of it. We would have chosen a dignified death on his terms if we could have. We owe it to ourselves to push harder for the criteria to be expanded, less bureaucracy in the process and more agency for the person seeking a good death.
“Death is something that happens only once in our lives. It is important that we conduct it well.” – Sadhguru I'm also very proud to have co-authored this thoughtpiece with my colleague Lauren Ware Morand on "In pursuit of a ‘good death’: Our lessons learned in supporting voluntary assisted dying programs across Australia". Despite our views or cultural backgrounds, having a 'good death' is a universal value that we should espouse. This thoughtpiece shares our lessons learnt across Australia in several projects, with a diverse group of clients. One of many takeaways is that with potentially divise topics, we implore organisations to engage stakeholders from all ends of the spectrum - despite their differences - to work together & never forget the person at the centre who may be going through the most difficult journey of their lives. Thank you to those who have partnered with us on these important projects & we continue looking forward to seeing positive impact in the pursuit of a 'good death' for all Australians. I've got a challenge for you! Over the past few months, myself & Towards Zero Suicide CIC, supported by Steve Phillip & The Jordan Legacy CIC, have been promoting our #ZeroSuicideSociety #JoinTheDotsTour... ...including our ground-breaking Launch Conference at the Baths Hall Scunthorpe on Wed 12 June, with its absolutely stunning line-up, due to an unprecedented 90% of invited Speakers & Panellists accepting our invitation: https://lnkd.in/eut9cd4J This is my final LinkedIn post promoting the Conference, and it's your final opportunity to be part of this unique experience. --- In the various fields we work in, we often 'live in a bubble'. We post and our posts are seen - and liked or supported and/or replied to - by others working in our field, often the same core group of people. We can lose perspective sometimes because we appear to be getting lots of 'engagement' - and lots of love & support in the case of the #SuicidePrevention community - but it can be from the same people, and not getting 'outside the bubble' to other people we need to be part of the conversation, and part of the solution. --- Yesterday was a day of joy-out-of-tragedy as people rallied round to support Ellen Roome and get her #JoolsLaw petition over the 100,000 signatures mark. The suicide prevention community was magnificent in its support but we only got past the 100,000 mark by connecting with other people 'outside the suicide prevention community' to get their signatures. There's a reason why only 0.37% of the 50,000 petitions to parliament have got more than 100,000 signatures. It's hard! --- So, here's my challenge to you. Please think of up to 3 people who you reckon might NOT know about our Launch Conference in Scunthorpe on 12 June, despite all previous posts, and please tag them in a reply comment below, encouraging them to buy a ticket (or two or a table) and help us get the UK suicide numbers on a downward trend #TowardsZeroSuicide Tickets are still available at £120 each - incredible value-for-money for this line-up - or there's an incentivised price structure to help create the best possible dynamics in the room so you can have a Table for up to 9 people for just £500. You can 'buy & host a table' - just ask us to send you an invoice straight away to reserve your table - and you can assemble your table of 6-9 people. We have an interesting mix of tables so far. Can you assemble a table of people from your location, your organisation, your sector or profession, or to cover a different issue or perspective on suicide & suicide prevention? And do it in the next 2 weeks? Then please buy a table for 6-9 people at £500. If not, please buy an individual ticket at £120. Also, buying 2 tickets qualifies you for a Stand if you want, ie just £240 for a Stand. It would be great to see you there at this world-first ZeroSuicideSociety Conference to launch a world-first JoinTheDotsTour.

An update from Matt VanAuken, Developmental Pathways’ CEO/Executive Director: “I wanted to give a quick update and let you all know that DP and its leadership are aware of the recent Colorado Sun article, which shares the real-world impact of the myriad challenges facing Colorado’s long-term care system (https://lnkd.in/g3HBzVmt). DP has been working tirelessly with community partners and HCPF on identifying and solving the countless underlying issues impacting families across the state and weighing heavy on our teams and county partners. We feel that we are making progress and that HCPF is working to resolve these complaints, and we will continue to push for solutions that bring relief quickly and foster genuine, long-term, sustainable solutions. Today is Red Nose Day The first Red Nose Day was held in 1988 in Australia to raise awareness and fundraise for SIDS – the unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant less than one year of age during a period of sleep. Through the efforts of raised awareness and ongoing research, the incidence of SIDS has been more than halved in recent years, but there is still more work to do. Red Nose is Australia’s leading authority on safe sleep and safer pregnancy advice as well as bereavement support for anyone who is affected by miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of a baby or child. Every dollar raised on Red Nose Day helps stop little lives being cut short and ensures every grief-stricken family gets the support they need.
