This month's Safety on the Sixth topic is extreme heat. During the summer months dangerous temperatures above 90 degrees with high humidity are common and can last for long periods. Older adults, children, and sick individuals are at a greater risk of having heat-related illnesses or incidents. The good news is, is that we can prepare for these extreme weather events, and illness and incidents are preventable! Here are some tips to "beat the heat": -Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing -Find shade when outside, and wear a hat to protect your face -Drink plenty of fluids all day, every day -Avoid high-energy activities outdoors -If being outside during these high heat events is unavoidable, take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors -Become familiar with the symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps (to learn more you can visit https://lnkd.in/eRXZR2m) -If you start to experience symptoms of heat-related illness, immediately seek help and focus on cooling off Join us next month on the 6th for another Safety on the Sixth topic. Get ready for a very HOT weekend ahead 🥵 Let us help you navigate it safely and be prepared! This Saturday at 2 p.m. will likely be peak heat at 90°F, with a heat index of 105, and high to extreme heat risk in some parts of Southern Florida. Heat index is a measure of how hot it feels when humidity is combined with the actual air temperature. It's crucial to take precautions against heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and sunburn. Those most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses include older adults (65+), young children, individuals with chronic health conditions or mental illness, athletes who exercise outdoors, outdoor workers, people without access to air conditioning or living unsheltered, pregnant individuals, and pets. Extreme heat contributes to approximately 34 deaths and numerous hospitalizations each year in our area, according to local estimates. To ensure the safety of your loved ones, follow these hot-weather survival tips: 1️⃣ Stay Cool: Seek refuge in air-conditioned buildings. 2️⃣ Avoid Direct Sun: Stay out of the sun whenever possible. 3️⃣ Reduce Activity: Find shaded areas and limit physical exertion. 4️⃣ Choose Cooler Hours: Opt for outdoor activities in the early morning or evening. 5️⃣ Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water or electrolyte-rich beverages. Don’t wait until you are thirsty. 6️⃣ Apply Sunscreen: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays. 7️⃣ Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: These can contribute to dehydration. 8️⃣ Never Leave Kids or Pets in Cars: Even with windows cracked, it’s dangerous. 9️⃣ Watch for Symptoms: Seek immediate medical attention for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke (high body temperature, headache, dizziness, nausea, or confusion). Remember, staying cool and hydrated is essential during hot weather. Take care of yourself and those around you. Here comes the heat! As record temperatures head our way across Northern New England this week, know what to do to keep cool and look for signs of heat stroke. 1. Slow down by postponing or limiting outdoor activities. If you must work outdoors, take frequent breaks and avoid the hottest part of the day. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle alone. 2. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks. Check that animals also have access to fresh water and shade. 3. Spend time indoors in an air-conditioned place. If you don’t have air conditioning, go to a public library, shopping mall or public cooling center. Check on loved ones and neighbors who may be at risk and don’t have air conditioning. Heat stroke is a deadly condition that requires immediate medical help. Symptoms include a high body temperature; hot, red, dry or damp skin; a fast or strong pulse; a headache or dizziness; or nausea, confusion and passing out. Summer is just getting started.
